Dipstick tube should work. Mine looks similar and came off a 728i, so they are different to the typical e34 ones.

I'm running my m52b28 swap with a 240 e30 box, M20 flywheel, clutch and starter. 

Pretty sure the e36 boxes have the same spline on the input shaft as e30s. It's only on the late e46s where they decided to have variations. 

I'm running the Sachs m20 clutch in mine and it's great for daily use. 

Haven't had any issues with the axles on my swap, but aside from a few track days it's seen mostly daily use (though now it's more of a Sunday driver). 

I have a clio booster, and after testing someone else's e30 with an e90 one, I want to swap mine. 

Ah nice that one of those is getting saved, it didn't occur to me that the same person would buy both. 

I ended up going with a local shop in Hamilton to get the Headlining redone on the frame, and the fabric was a fairly close match. I did the removal and install myself. 

The Headlining on the touring isn't a particularly difficult job, and is touring specific, so I doubt you'll find anyone who has done it before. 

Most of the cloth seats I've seen are ripped, where as only the dried out leather seats have cracked. 

I think better off focusing on seats in good condition instead of what type.

I don't think today's modern cars will still be around as much in 30 years as say the e30.

Mostly in part due to all the electronics that are in modern cars.
It's difficult to get replacement control modules for cars over 10 years old from the dealer, and with NZ having such an old fleet, you'd struggle to get something for your 14+ year old. 
I think if you're looking to hold onto a modern car you'd best start learning how to repair electronic boards.

Yeah otherwise they'll want you to get thicker hubs.

I'd imagine you'd be looking at either an e36 or e46 m3 clutch and flywheel. 

More likely to depend on the gearbox and the input shaft to determine the spline count. 

I'll let someone else weigh in with more details.

Everyone knows the road to 0 means the road to 0km/h. Because if no one is driving there won't be any car accidents. 

Welcome. Looks to be a tidy catch, and the m40 motor while low on power was pretty reliable for me, was a nice engaging experience in a manual. 

I ended up grabbing it. Everything is about what you'd expect for a minimally maintained BMW. Has oil leaks from the valve cover, gearbox is a bit funny to shift into, intake boot is duct taped up to seal a split. 

Will uncover more once the weather fines up. 

Plan to check the compression, and the gearbox it has, as the vin decoder returns it as an auto. However it does have working cruise control, so its likely been done correctly.

I've found that with the supercheap auto brake spanners they skip. But my regular teng spanners don't have that issue.

Found that one out the hard way once....

Pretty sure it's just the engine mounts from your old m40 go onto the m42. No subframe swapping required. Not that you can easily swap the front subframes.

Yeah, if someone could enlighten me on why this one is so much, I get the dog leg box is pretty rare, and it's tidy, but didn't think it would be that desirable.

Yeah, sounds like you'd be in for a minimum of a starter and new battery to at least see if it can get cranking again.

But seems odd he's not willing to at least throw that much into it considering how much manual 130i's are currently, and he's done a few deals with cars previously.

Worst case though something has grenaded in the bellhousing, and you're in for a gearbox + motor replacement. 

I would have thought replacing a clutch slave would require the gearbox to come off, and then someone misplace the trigger wire for the starter... but I've seen stranger things happen.
