No easy answer Graham according to bmw fans they have different part numbers a 96 e36 318ti has 3  std , sport and poor road use.all different part numbers Using a 98 318 i sedan their are five types listed std Boge, Sport Bilstien one for a hot climate and one listed Auto R.Checking a 318 coupe they are the same as the sedans. That doesn't mean they will not fit but how well they will function is another story

Why not just buy a plastic bucket about $5.00 and put a raised grate in the bottom. Something like what is used to put baking on these are chrome plated. Should let the dirt drop to the bottom of the bucket and keep the clothes clean

Sweet good here always nice if you can get a replacement one for nothing. As for the leak they can be a pain have struck it when looking for one a flood of water showed little. But were as a small amount over a longer time period and once it started it just came in like a river. It became an involved process but your panel beater mate should set you straight. Is it just bad luck or has the vehicle had a tap in the rear?

Looking at the pic of the tensioner they are the old spring loaded type ones correct. Their is an conversion kit available which uses a hydraulic piston. This seems to eliminate the rattling noise with the spring type as the spring looses tension and cannot keep the drive belt tight, it allows it to jump coursing the rattle. The dealer converted mine was not cheap at the time but had no further trouble

As for your boot leak have you removed the boot seal rubber and checked the condition of the metal lip and channel. Also from memory their is a body join some were in the area of the boot hinge what is the sealant  condition and the join like.

Olaf if that was 4 to 5 yrs ago then he will need a chair and some oxygen now. Have a invoice from Pelican dated 5/7/13 for $115.25 US for the same item so not to far of the mark. Shane hope the repairs are not to serious to get the bimmer back on the road and you can enjoy driving it.

. If your motor is a M52 their are two, exhaust part number 12147518628 inlet is different part number 12141438081.As Neil has mentioned try for an OEM type one. At the end of the day it all comes down to ones' personnel preference and how much molar you are willing to part with. A bit of behind the scenes dealing involved also so two heads are better than one

Lets get real here Jonathan are you handy with a spanner have the necessary gear and knowledge to do the job if a DIY. If not the money to pay some one?

Is their or is their not an oil leak from the sump gasket  If it is a DIY do you know what it involves. To replace the sump gasket on one of these is a pain in the arse type job, personal experience.

if the sump has to come off the condition of the inside of the sump plus crank cover or splash cover will be a good indicator to how well the engine has been looked after. If it ain't broke don't try and fix it comes to mind

An item to check would be your engine mounts these compress over time. my 2 cents worth

When I dismantled the donor car a 2001 325 sedan the curtain air bags from memory had a expiry date  of 2016/17 on them.

Interesting do you have any links to ceramic coating and what sort of temp reduction it gives ?.

An interesting project you have going Nathan and will follow it be interesting to see what you come up with to get it lower and back motor wise.The piece you removed from memory was the mounting point for heat protection of the DME, auto control unit,  some relays, engine fuses and the meeting place of both vehicle and engine wiring loom. Are you going to relocate these of make up something  to replace it?.
