I was under the impression that M cars were fitted with engines typical of a race car and even race cars have been known to suck a drop or two of the sweet sweet fully synthetic.100HP per 1000cc x N/A = oil consumpstion

You say you only get the smell after "spirited" driving which means your exhuast temp will go higher than normal driving which will burn off residue from the cat.Chances are your cat is fine, if it is not rattling or blocked then leave it in to do its intended job.

The valve is open when cold and closed when at operating temp.No offence intended but for the price of three second hand valves and possibly another electronic valve + fuel or courier to get the parts you may have been able to have trouble free motoring with a new wax valve from the start?

You could always fix the original problem by fitting a idle valve that works correctly then set your base idle at running temp.Then set your mixture with a gas analizer, if no other faults are present such as air leaks it should run as sweet as it came out of the factory
