  1. I apologise for the lack of updates over the last few days, I've been busy working on the car. It is now all physically back together, drivetrain, exhaust, brakes, engine etc all done. All coolant hoses etc are hooked up. I have also relocated the battery to the trunk using e36 parts.

Tonight and over the weekend I will be doing the last few small jobs and doing the wiring. The plan to have it driving by the end of the weekend looks very realistic. More to come soon.

Nice - I should bring the e30 round for a visit.

  2. Bit more driving and trouble-shooting. Had the driveshaft out multiple times trying to work out the driveline vibration issue. Rebalanced (was pretty much fine). Turns out the angle of the engine->guibo was a little too severe. Down to compression of the new OEM rubber mounts I suspect. Shimmed the transmission mounts slightly, worked a treat.

Shimmed the engine mounts slightly too as the sump was resting on the steering rack. Better again. Just been driving it around a bit. Awesome thing - so much torque immediately on hand.

Diff might be a tiny bit short, but not as bad as I thought it would be. It is pretty fond of the one wheel peel though with an open diff.

    Still to do:

    • Windscreen washers
    • Some electrical stuff
    • Thermostat controlled electric fan
    • Cert (& driveshaft loops)
    • New sporty muffler
    • Battery relocation

  3. Exhaust modified to avoid steering linkage.

Swapped in a 3.73 med case rear end & axles. Poly diff bush. New subframe bushings.

    First test drive:

    • Brakes are great w/ new booster - a bit firmer but lovely
    • Clutch feels awesome
    • Goes like a banshee
    • One or two issues, primarily mysterious driveline vibration. Has to be driveshaft related based on a bit of trial and error.

  4. or try e28 e24 m30 manifolds?

Internet says they'd be even more of a mission - but we both know how many grains of salt to take that kind of information with.

I'm planning on reusing the e34 downpipes, so I think my best course of action will be to slightly extend the tubular section of the front header (maybe by about an inch), and correspondingly shorten the downpipe by the same amount.

Sure i'll be in touch soon to see if we can find a front half of a driveshaft thats the right length out of the box, plus a washer bottle that i can wrangle in somewhere :)

  5. Engine moved to my home garage, and fully re-assembled.

Using the m30 in the 7 series as reference :)

Made up some custom hoses out out of a mix of m20 and m30 factory hoses.

    Lots of cleaning of parts

Picked up a single mass flywheel from an e28 from Brent, along with a matching PP and clutch. Had them all reconned by Auto Clutch.

Issues with steering linkage clearance - going to have to do something with the manifold.

  6. Just had my m30 head rebuilt for the e30 swap. This included a cam rebuild and regrind, done by Franklin Cams. Head rebuild done by Doug from Dougs Engineering in Puke (this is who franklin recommended to me). Recommend both unreservedly.

Came to around $900 total, including parts. Replaced around half the rockers.

I did all the monkey work getting out of the car myself.
