  1. I'm surprised the fair go line has ever worked for anybody. That line gets thrown at me from time to time in my job, and it has absolutely no impact because why would fair go give a sh*t? And who actually watches fair go and makes decisions from it anyway? Reminds me of this http://www.fat-pie.com/thechildthatsmeltfunny.htm "I think you'll find all the ingredients for a good complaint in that room over there!"

I think the ombudsman is a much better way to go as the people on the phone you are speaking with know that even if you go to the ombudsman and don't win, they still have to pay them money. The rep's on the phone couldn't care less if you went to fair go. They don't get paid enough to care.

  2. So 6 weeks ago I was looking around bobistheoilguy forums and remembered how UOA (used oil analysis) is very popular in the states. After searching for a New Zealand company that offers this kind of service, I found none.

So I went to the main company that is used over there (Blackstone Labs), and their site offers a free testing kit that is posted to you in the mail, and you send it back and pay $25USD to have your oil analysed. I figured I'd try request a kit and see if they'll send it here, and they did!

So when I get my car back from the mechanic I'm going to take an oil sample, send it off and in another month or so I should get a report that looks something like this:

    Posted Image

Handy as it also tells you if there is coolant in the oil amongst other things.

Would be good to get some comparisons with other M52 engines.

Link if anybody is interested in a free kit

  3. May as well just get the BMW fluid, most dealerships sell it out of a tank for $50/l Which transmission is it? Never tried Redlines ATF but their shockproof oil that a mechanic put in my old Nissan's transmission made it sound awful.

  4. I'll send you mine on monday.

New is a really really expensive. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearc...;FILTER_BMWM=ON i'd hate to think what bmw will charge for it.

It's cheaper (and better in my opinion) to go for an aftermarket one

    http://www.carpartsdiscount.com/auto/parts...html?3593=70943

Not too bad if you look around.

Think Luk is OEM brand or maybe OES. Fairly sure they do the OEM flywheel for the M3.

  5. i dont believe them , go down there and match the 2 flywheels back to back and see if the teeth numbers etc are the same.

Sold now anyway, they told me that the flywheel I already had in my car mysteriously broke when they removed the transmission and that the one provided didnt match up. Oh well! Sold now anyway and I'll probably be ordering a brand new one cause I can't be bothered with it all anymore. Spent way to many hours trying to source all this crap >_<

  6. My Lady is wanting to get a new car, shes keen on a Golf Mk4 GTI, and Im trying to talk her into a E36 318is Motorsport which I think Im bringing her around to, no turbo to worry about, and a chain over a cambelt etc.

Anyway is there anthing to look out for on these models?

Is there anything to worry about seeing as howthe were built in South Africa? Any odd ball parts?

Also, does anyone know what brand the factory shocks are for this model?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E36/

Shows BOGE as the brand when you look up the part number on pelicanparts.

Make sure you take the car to be inspected at a BMW workshop or a dealership as AA tends to have trouble knowing the quirks with euros...

  7. I'm sure these should be able to fit.

Starter is the same, pilot bearing is the same, release bearing is the same, clutch fork is the same, slave cylinder was the same up till 99 and the other will still fit, master cylinder is the same, 323's came out with the 240mm flywheel and clutch stuff up till the end of 95. They used the same gearbox up untill 97

edit: should also say the getrag 250 was still used on the later e36's. Only problem could be that the newer getrags didn't allow for 240mm gear. This i doubt though

Jerry Clayton tried to fit it, but found that the flywheel's teeth didnt match up to the starter motor?

The part number they gave me that I need is a 228mm flywheel while the one I have on trademe is 240mm.\

And my 323 is a 1997 (manufacture date Sept 1996) and has a Getrag 250.

  8. hmm I have one that is missing a ring gear. Not sure of its condition as I have never used it (was off the s50) if that helps?

Need the complete thing unfortunately. Not sure that would fit anyway, my engine is M52 and as far as I'm aware only the 323 and 523 fit. Thanks though!

  9. Come on. we are talking about car polish here, grab one is definitely out of the list. The place that you are going to, i hope they do a good job, do they have any before and after pictures that they did for their customers, because i don't want to pay 400 or 500 bucks for a crappy job. The one in carfe is a rip off. I paid 250 and done in 1 hour. A normal process should at least take 1 days work.

The one I'm going to has been around for about 13 years I think. And they have plenty of photos on their facebook page @ http://www.facebook.com/pages/Final-Touch/ lots of lambo's and other high price cars.

I'll post before and after photos when I've been and tell you how it goes.

I think the grabone deal would be fine for what it is, it's just a standard clean not a restoration.

1 hours not a bad thing if they have 4 people working on your car the whole time (doubt it) but I wouldn't ever go back to carfe personally.

  10. Check out this site

    http://www.finaltouch.co.nz/Default.aspx?T...96&LangID=0

I'm going there in a couple of weeks, they seem a lot more professional and knowledgeable than places like Car-fe (who let the lady who makes coffee have a go with an orbital buffer on half of my old car and burnt through the paint)

Otherwise, check out this link http://www.grabone.co.nz/refer/322647 and click on Car Wash and Detail. $75 clean for $37 is pretty good!

  11. It's pretty easy to do yourself and just pay for the oil & filter.

You can reset the service indicator yourself with nothing but a paperclip

    http://www.bimmerdiy.com/diy/e36oilchange/

    http://www.bmwe36blog.com/2007/02/24/reset...-service-light/

If you do it yourself, you can choose your own oil. Most places seem to use Castrol Magnatec 10W30 or 10W40 which isn't the correct grade for your car, and I've found it tends to look a lot dirtier after it's depleted.

You have the same car as me and should be using a 5W40 grade oil. Something like Mobil 1 if you can find it or Mobil Super Syn will do fine and you can get it from Super Cheap / Partmaster, though you will need to buy 2x 4L containers. Since the engine takes about 6.9 litres of oil, you can use a litre to rinse through after emptying the old junk and keep the rest in case you need a top up.

For $400 they should be using OEM BMW Oil, changing your transmission fluid & diff oil, give you a loan car and shine your shoes!

  12. you will need a matching driveshaft and maybe mount etc

    what is that gearbox from a e30 m20 ???

dont know that number. where did you get that number from.

what abou the diff ratio you have???

how many rpm at 100kmh in 5th is it doing .

just buy a good used getrag 220

    from a 316i 318ti 318is 318i 320i 323i 325i

    or zf from a 328i or m3.

i can help there if you need.

    021433600

neither give much trouble , most will see 400,000km if oil is changed and idiots dont change gears with no clutch etc

The number printed on the transmission in my car is: 220.0.0225.94 which searches tell me Getrag 225

Theres one on trademe at the moment which has the number 220.0.0225.97 which is a Getrag 250.

If I buy the 250, what other parts would I need for it to fit?

And does anybody have a 225?
