  1. Have you got any plans for a demister for front screen once you remove the heater box? You will need it if you want to run in any motorsport (including clubsport) events under schedule A, and it's a good idea anyway, once it's gone you'll probably find you miss it!

Trying to get ideas for mine ;)

  2. Moving on from yesterday, took the left front guard off. Inner wing is destroyed, and bulkhead corner is pretty messy. This is going to be a challenging fix, but from what I can tell it is still repairable.

Wouldn't be economically viable, but I have the welder so I'm not paying for it. Might be a good 5 year project now though!

  3. The point they will probably use is that the internal indicator device will indicate a fault (by flashing faster, or not at all) when the indicators themselves fail, and with it not working then a fault could go unnoticed. In practice you can hear it too, but when a visual indicator is present it should work.

Might be worth trying another cluster if you can borrow one, will rule out a cluster fault at least.

  4. Have started cleaning the new E30. Found the source of the stale smell, rear ashtray full of butts. Got carried away because the rear seat belt latches don't fit in the seat holders, so swapping in the rear seatbelts from the racecar (kept for 9 years in case I needed them one day).

Everywhere the previous owner has had rust repaired is rusting again, badly. Pretty disappointed but I knew it was going to be a project. The 2 year old paintjob will be re-done before another 2 years is up, might look at colour options because white isn't doing it for me.

May I ask where did you get such a cheap e30?. I'm looking for a good deal too but nothing even close to 1200

Trademe, keep an eye out, and don't be too fussy. It's a project of course, but I really wanted another Pre-Facelift and they almost always have rust so figure the cheaper the better, as a good starting point.

Well, if it's getting a WoF before sale at least you'll get 4 new tyres.

Still warrantable at 29 years old, unfortunately.

    2. All the tyres on a vehicle class MA, MB, MD1 or NA that was first registered or re-registered in New Zealand from 1 October 2002, other than vehicles that are incapable of exceeding 30km/h or are 30 years old or more, are not of the same carcass type (ie mixed steel ply, fabric radial ply, bias/cross ply, run-flat).

  7. Definitely the correct plate for the car, VIN matches up and says  3' E46 BMW 320i

So not a false plate, and not surprising that they have it as what it has been (incorrectly) registered as, considering Trademe fills those fields in automatically when listing if you supply the plate number. But they should definitely know better as well!

  8. It is definitely possible to buy back, and if it is de-registered as an insurance write-off it is noted on the NZTA system so needs repair certs and full entry certification to be able to re-register. However very common for people to buy wrecks back cheap and then part out so they can recover all the good bits off the car.

  9. I agree 100% with Ron on this one, this is why Aviation fuel tanks have drains at the lowest point in each tank and the system overall, which must be checked before flight for water, and all water drained until the fuel-check vial comes up with only fuel and no water bubbles.

Also, Olaf, I have seen stickers such as those before, I think at Mobil Porirua, and maybe at some Gull stations but I can't be sure where. It was a sticker like that at Mobil that prompted me to go inside and talk to the attendant, who looked my car up in their approved make/model book and said no-go to the BMW I had at the time as well as my Subaru Legacy.
