Vent

Hi guys.. I dont expect anyone to be able to give an answer to these problems, based on a text description.. but here goes anyways.. Every now and then, happened twice since i bought my car on 30th December, it runs rough.. as if on 5 cylinders.. and I get a strange shaking/vibration sensation all over the car. I contacted the previous owner, and he said it was doing that when he first bought the car himself, and fixed the problem by replacing the exhaust gasket ... ??? which sounds very odd... but ok.. Just today, i started the car, was fine, drove it 10 mins, was fine all the way. Turned car off.. came back 5 mins later, started car, right off the bat it was running rough, as described above. When revs get over 4k, the noise/vibrations go away, and it becomes smooth again.. Revs fall under 4k, roughness comes back.. Car stayed this way all the way for the 10 mins drive home. No idea what it is, am seeking opinions prior to taking car to mechanics to be looked at. Second problem is a knocking noise when turning right hand corners. If i turn left, it "resets" the noise, next right hand corner, I get a knocking/thumping sound. If i turn 2 right hand corners in a row, the noise only sounds the first time.. As posted before, everything in the boot is secure, and it sounds like its coming from under the car. Have checked exhaust, and thats not the source of the problem.. Have checked all wheel nuts, secure and tight. Checked suspension, doesnt seem to be any problems there, but i am leaning towards a worn shock... shrug. Also, does anyone from Wellington have a really great repairer that they go to for work? someone who enjoys working on bimmers, and someone who takes great pride in their work? Would love any suggestions please... I would really love to get these problems sorted out before the megameet, as i wouldnt be too comfortable driving the 400km or so if its going to be running rough, or a risk that something could break worse on the trip up there. Well im at work during those hours, with NOTHING to do... hence i sit on irc and talk sh*t.

While we're on the subject of weird noises... I also get a very strange "thump" from the boot/rear of car. Happens only when i turn RIGHT hand corners.. and turning LEFT hand corners seems to RESET it... so if i turn left, no noise.. but next right turn, i get the thump. If i turn another right corner, without turning left, no thump. i have done a very exhaustive search of my boot, made sure that theres nothing in there thats rolling around. Made sure my jack, and other tools are secure. Battery is secure. Subs are secure enough (heavy, and carpetted, so shouldnt move) So im at a loss.. only other thing im considering it might be, is something mechanical under the car, such as axles, possibly diff related? Very strange.. I should take my subs out of the car and see if it still does it. Then remove all tools, see if it still does it.. so on until i get rid of the noise.... bloody frustrating.

Mine does the same thing, 6 cylinder E30.. Altho Im thinking mine is more of an exhaust leak... Also, i get a ticking from behind the dash, which i put down to a noisy speedo cable? it goes away after driving for 5 mins or so..

So the mono setup is using the two "white" plug holes on the amp... Sorry, quite new to custom setups.. All this stuff had been set up for me, and havnt had to change it with each car, until now.. Thanks sic.. I appreciate your comments.

Turns out the sub popping is just a common thing with the lightning audio amp that I am currently using. Ran some more RCAs yesterday, from headunit to back, will install a 4 channel sony amp and run my 2 10s from that, bridged.. One quick question regarding that tho.. The 4 channel amp that im going to use, has 2 RCA inputs, front and back, effectively 4 plug holes. If im running RCA from the SUB outs on headunit, to this 4 channel amp, where do i plug the 2 RCA plugs into? The amp has markings for "mono" and it seems to point to the two "white" RCA plug holes.. do i plug the red/white plugs into those, or should i be doing a "diagonal" plug, ie plugging the red RCA into the RIGHT RED plug hole, and the white RCA into the LEFT WHITE plug hole? Any idea?

heh, thanks for the idea.. I might take your idea, and evolve it a bit, and buy some chrome spray paint.. If i was to go with black, id have to do the side surrounds too, and i cant be fscked doing that... so will consider doing front and rears with chrome.. Also, car will eventually be gloss black, so wanna prepare for that... chrome + black = shizzle, muh nizzle.. but just say NO to chrome wheels... :x
