  1. Hi all,

I was considering swapping my battery to the boot for 1. my fastening brackets for the battery were all but gone when I got the car and 2. it more evenly distributes the weight of the car (but woop dee doo, I'm not racing the thing) 3. the tray where it is currently sitting in the engine bay looks as though to be a nice place for my alarm siren to sit.

I have done a little research on this whole business of relocating the power unit and noticed that some BMW E30's came standard with the battery in the boot. There seems to be a perfect little spot just behind the drivers side wheel arch in the boot.

Anyway my question is: How many cables will I need? As I am worried if I don't route every cable going to my positive battery terminal I might heat something up and destroy it. Today i bought 4 metres of 8 gauge twin power cable.

The guy at JayCar said I should be fine with that, just route positive to positive and use the length to keep it simple and go from the negative along to the front of the car and connect it where the current negative is sitting.

Then I bought a high amp wire connecter hub so I can grab the current array of wires from where my positive terminal sits and tidily route them into it and then have my cables from the boot meeting up with them there. I have around 3 cables going into the positive terminal at the moment and there is where I am unsure. How can I just use 1 cable from the boot to meet up with 3 cables from the engine bay?

I have a spare cable that goes to an amp I could use as well. Anyway, any insight on this would be great. Thanks guys.

  2. Hi all, (Sorry I misplaced this in the maintenance section)

I was flushing my brake fluid out today on all 4 wheels and unfortunately noticed the drivers side front brake calipers bleeder valve has been shorn or broken off. I wasn't able to bleed that brake because of that which is a little annoying. Whats more annoying is the thought of having to drill the sucker out and sort this.

I also need a spring/clip thingy for the drivers side rear caliper. Are these things necessary? What purpose do they serve?

Also whenever I'm faced with getting spares or little things like that i tend to get very stuck as I have no idea where to start looking to get them, so any replies as to where I can go would be great. I thought of taking the bleeder valve off my old clutch slave cylinder but at a glance it looks like its going to be too small.

    Cheers

  4. They are still advertising 4 door kits on the auctions though? Tut tut.

Yep. I think they mean the side skirts + the front and rear bumpers will fit either 2 or 4 door variants. But the door caps will only fit a 2 door. I guess you could buy the kit and for the 4 door some how (if you were good as fibre glass work) make something up for the door caps. You might have to glass it all together in one long piece and then measure it and cut it to fit your car? I guess it could be done in time and carefully.

The kit they advertise on Trademe as 2dr/4dr is 2 door complete or 4 door without the door pods... The front and rear aren't to bad but require work, the side skirts are a nightmare.

Well its a shame theres no place to get 4 door caps any more. Was there a lot of cutting away and re fibre glassing when you did it?

  5. I'm really interested in doing this also. Last time I checked 'Drift Max' only had the 2 door version available. Are they quite hard to fit due to the nature of them being fibre glass from moulds?

Blairs car looks stunning with that tech 2 on. I would be stoked if mine looked like that wen I was done!

I had a quick look at that thread of yours from some time ago Blair, but was the kit originally for a 2 door and then customised to suit your car?

  6. Yeah I had already thought about that, haha would be a pain having them in with no chance of having proper leg clearance to the pedals etc. The car is an on going project so I don't mind buying the seats first just to have them sit round until I've made my mounts and things up for them.

    Cheers

  7. After some e36 sport leather seats for my e30. I found a couple on trademe but I'm more swaying towards having electroni adjustment with heated seat function. Not reeeaalllyy needed but might be fun to wire up and have working one day.

    Cheers

  8. Hi there Darren, I'm local and I'm pretty keen on doing this myself. Could I get some help with the dimensions of the mounts? I am keen to make some up for myself. Also did you manage to get these from Napier, BJ's wreckers or NAS? I'm on the lookout for some like it, just missed the boat by a bit buying them off you ;) cheers mate

  9. This is really, really nice. Excellent job so far. Makes me envious about my own, but none the less its still fun to work on. I love the seat conversion you've done, it turned out amazingly I might have to have a think about doing some e36 seats in my own. Will probably post up a project thread to get some help/ideas. Anyway best of luck on yours, looks great.

  10. well done mate. In my experiences you can't rely on BMW mechanics. I found it best to consult these forums, get a bit of a direction/consult google and everything goes far smoother than wasting time and money paying for work that never gets done on a 'mechanic'. Main thing is not to let it get the best of you, there is a solution so don't stress. Best of luck

  11. Yes it was, I introduced myself again for this account in the new member introductions. My old account was just set up in order to get some minor help. Anyway, yeah I suspected that's all the check light was on for. The whole engine was complete minus some pumps but it had done 135k kms and was all still together so the intake came with it. I put it in myself. I sincerely hope this isn't a vacuum leak is that what this might be more leaning towards? It does seem like unmetered air getting in.

  12. Sorry for the confusion before I posted a response from my old account on here.

When the engine had been removed I made sure all the loom and wires/plugs in the engine bay were tidy, I also checked the C191 plugs from the old engine and all the wiring looked immaculate. I especially checked the one which goes up and connects to the C191 injector plug. The engine came with another C191 injector plug as well. I can't really rule that out nor can I rule the MAF or o2 sensor as they all aren't new, just spares basically.

The car is a 1988 and the engine is from a 1990. Here is a video that might show the problem a bit better:

  13. Ever since I bought this e30 M20, well over a year ago it has never run right.

Fitting a new engine, I thought all my woes would disappear! Unfortunately not quite but nearly - still have this minor issue. :(

When the car is started from cold it revs up around 2k rpm and acts a little weirdly until it is warm then the problem seems to disappear. It seems to be using too much gas and the smell is quite apparent either from the exhaust or around the engine bay (not sure exactly what I'm looking for in the way of smells here but it does smell quite rich). When the engine's temp is just below half the idle is rock solid at around 800rpm and it drives beautifully. I can't really determine if its still running rich when its hot but all I can say is that I'm quite sure generally the car uses too much gas. On a side note, the other day after the car got warmed up and was driving for a while the revs went up high again for just a little more added confusion.

I have fitted a new MAF sensor as I thought I would start there, unfortunately it doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. When I start the car cold and unplug the MAF sensor the revs level out much lower... would this suggest a faulty MAF sensor?

If the car is hot and idle is smooth when the gas pedal is sharply pressed the car's revs jitter and it stumbles to keep up with the sharply pressed gas pedal - I have looked at the TPS, unplugged it when the car is running (no difference) I can hear the sharp click of it when I move it when the car is not running.

My next guess is blue temperature sensor, lucky I have a spare to try.

Any ideas/guidance/help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. :D

  14. Hi bimmersport lads and lasses,

I'm semi new. I set my old account up to try and get some help for a myriad of problems I had with my 1988 e30 but I thought I'd make a more permanent one as I really enjoyed my time on the forums and found there are a bunch of decent - helpful people here. I didn't know very much about cars back then and even less about mighty BMW's. I have probably now spent more time under my e30 than in it but I still love it and will continue to keep making it a really nice example. There is quite a ways to go and many, many plans but I'm getting there. Its recently had a new engine/new radiator/new gear box(manual conversion)/dashboard/fluids you name it.

It is almost running like it should be but there is something still causing an issue. I will probably be looking for some help on here for that. Also I busted the steering in a rush to get the thing a warrant for daily work runs but oh well, more fun under the hood eh.

    Cheers thanks for having me
