  1. Been looking at this on FB, wish I had more money.

On a side note, about one of the only decent things I've seen on D south in quite some time... and still no ones interested. But they'd pay that much for a beaten up Jappa with mis-matching panels, fake wheels and an over boosted engine... then get "ripped off" like everyone on there seems to because I don't think any of them actually check out what they're buying...

  2. Damn, I wouldn't mind that! Too bad all my car funds have dried up and the 540 ate it's chain guides....

I can always drive it around for anyone who wants to fly down :D

2 Days, 2 different cars Ive always wanted have shown up. Someone buy this before I spend my travel fund!

Spend ya travel funds, a manual E30 6cyl is better than travelling right?

  3. These m62's are such a fantastic design...very reliable with no design flaws... cough cough, I dread the timing chain guides going on top of everything else. Would be quite a good DIY though if you have the time and facilities.

Still deciding on whether to repair or not, the funds for this would get me much needed suspension upgrades in my Ford or a bunch of stuff for the W124... however it's worth nothing right now so probably should repair it :D

Yup, those are horrendous. Enough to stop me wanting one.

Wow. That right there looks like something I would never like to play with!

Here are a few pics from mine when I had this work done back in 2010.

The item circled in red is a piece of one of the guides that made it's way up there, causing a nasty rattle sound.

Sweet pics, cheers! Job itself looks fine it's just looks very labour intensive. Did you have any other chunks of plastic roaming around the heads?

  4. Sorry no help, but just curious, how many k's on the beast?

There's about 231k. The poor thing didn't have a good life with the previous owner. When I changed the oil in it, the filter disintegrated in the housing and the oil was as Black as can be.

Vanos wasn't really making any noise at all, but guess it's best to do it while I'm in there. Thanks BreakMyWindow, will check them out.

  5. Excellent, thanks mate. That kit is well priced. And WOW, I'm glad I'm able to do the work myself looking at that job costing!

Is there anyone in NZ that services the VANOS units are do we still need to send them to the US? (I'm not game enough to try a vanos rebuild)

  6. Hey guys,

So one or more of the timing chain guides/tensioner went in the 540i on Thursday. Started off with a light tick and then within a couple of minutes it transformed into quite the clatter. It's currently stored at BMW's lock up (my friend works there) until I find a way to get it home. Towing wouldn't be an issue but as I live on a hill, I don't know many cars that would be too happy pulling the beast up there.

Has anyone got any parts suppliers they would recommend on price? Was looking at the guides from AutohausAZ as that's where I get most of my parts from but at $us100 a guide, plus $us100 for the tensioner, extra for gaskets and freight and extra $$ for the VANOS rebuild I may as well do while in there it's damn expensive!

Was planning on selling it, but now I'm not sure whether to fix it and give it to the wife or sell it as it currently is...

Good thing I bought an E320 a few weeks ago :D

  7. Don't get it... For the same money as that red one you could import this, buy a supercharger kit and boost it to around 415bhp and have plenty of money left over to sort any bits and bobs that need doing. I know which I'd rather be driving!

That site is awesome! How costly is it to import vehicles? Just the transporting and customs part etc.

Got me thinking about importing a 190e 16v from there...... too bad I just bought an E320T.

  8. Hey guys,

Just throwing this up there, will get more pics over the weekend as this is currently all i have. (sorry!)

I'm selling my 540 as I need the money to use on my 190e (don't flame me :D).

I'll get straight to the bad points:

It has the torque converter issue and will need to be repaired/replaced. I was planning on doing this but I have too many other things on my plate.

Front bumper is the facelift type and the foglights need wired up again (included).

    Ambient temp sensor is missing.

    Wheel well plastics needed

Bonnet, rear door and sill are in primer, need painted.

S-EDC shocks are leaking slightly on the front right.

    MID pixels aren't that great.

    The Good:

It's recently had $200 of Fuchs GT1 5-30 poured into it.

    New OEM spark plugs fitted

New valve cover gaskets included (not fitted)

6 month old tyres on the Style 66's

    Euro boot lid fitted

    ///M steering wheel fitted

    CELIS style rear lights

Engine makes very slight VANOS/Chain rattle, didn't before the 5-30 oil change so could be best to drain and refill with something thicker.

I'll include a Magnaflow 10780 Tru-X cross over pipe and two 35123 double wall tips.

If i can't get $3k for it, i'll either part it out or fix it and try sell again.

Either PM me or txt me 0211230061

    Cheers,

    Mason.

  9. Some of those symptoms sound like Torque converter issues - The bogging down in 4th/5th part, shudder and vibrations. You can usually hear a muffled grinding sound also.

Hmmm, that's what i feared at the start. Had a quick look under the car today while I was checking what fluid/filter to buy and noticed a leak under the bellhousing. Thinking either trans fluid or rear main has gone. Also has a leak from somewhere around the selector linkage (or whatever it is).

Also on the topic of CCV, I had a look today and noticed it's missing a vacuum line, any idea what hose is meant to be plugged in here? I searched all around the engine bay and couldn't find a hose or fitting.

Sorry to hijack your thread Russell, just thought it easier than starting a new one for the same thing.

  10. 2.25" inner diameter should be perfect.

    Excellent, I'll go with that.

57mm too big? really? , they might suit a low revving push rod V8 or two valve engine.

Provided you have decent headers to actually structure the flow through the engine a well designed 4 valve will benefit from a lot more pipe.

For example 3 litre M3 runs twin 63mm pipes you have 4 litres of air to process at the same RPM or 30% more so correctly designed so you could go to 67mm ID

I run twin 63 mm pipes ( Actually an M3 system) on my 328 and they are just fine - with good headers good power and torque gain right across the rev range.

and put some decent mufflers on it not those rubbish magnaflows designed for strangled American V8s

I've just got the stock m62 headers.

On my highly modded, 5-speed pushrod 5.0, dual 2.5" probably isn't the best. Dual 2.25" probably would have provided better back pressure. And it's not exactly low revving.

Magnaflow are very good quality, full stainless steel and straight through. Flow master and the likes are complete rubbish.

I had also considered Borla, but I've never seen or heard them in person.

I was going to go with a 3" system and a Magnaflow 14815 back box but I'm not a big fan of single 3" systems and I love the sound of the Magnapacks.

^ You will find Magnaflow mufflers are very good quality Ron, as good as OEM specification in many cases.

Its flowmasters that are the rubbish ones designed for american v8s.

But yeah I'd go 2.25 or 2.5 tube with an M62

Thanks, I'll stick with 2.25 seeing as i have the x pipe and tips already.

  11. This is the exact problem I'm having right now. Seems to be getting worse and worse.

Sluggish acceleration, mild-lumpy idle, weird trans shifting including sometimes shifting into 2nd when braking on a hill, surging/bogging down when in 5th, shudder/vibration intermittently (mainly in 4th/5th).

Also just read the PCV link you put up Julian and I'm getting the whistling on acceleration symptom. Thought it was the engine fan combined with dodgy door seals but it's definitely a whistling/wind noise coming from near the firewall.

Have been trying to get INPA running, but doesn't want to work for me!

  12. Hi folks,

Have searched everywhere and can't seem to find any information about exhaust sizes on 540's. Everyone seems to buy off the shelf systems or go with a simple 3".

I'm looking to go with something similar to my Ford 5.0 but in a smaller pipe and more mufflers so it's not too loud.

Currently thinking of a Magnaflow Tru-X x pipe, de-cat, twin 2.25 mild steel, a Magnapack 5" round muffler in each pipe and a small, simple resonator in each pipe and two Magnaflow double wall tips.

I already have the x-pipe and tips (left over from when i went bigger on my Ford set-up)

Piping runs side by side so it exits on the same side.

Is the twin 2.25" going to be too big?

  13. Thats a lot of date. You would have to be streaming at least two-three movies a day on it, downloading a lot of in game content and also playing a LOT of games. Gaming it self takes very little data.

  14. Jap/US spec boot lid for an E39 in Titansilber.

Boot lid is bare, comes with a 520 badge. Good condition, has a small dent about the size of a pea on the top and has adhesive residue from removing the M spoiler.

Can come with the boot lock if wanted although i don't have the key for it.

Just did a euro boot swap on my car so transferred everything over.

$100 ono, can wrap and arrange freight. Sorry for the poor photo my phone isn't feeling well at the moment.

  15. Wow... it's pretty tidy, but not mint - I'd sell it cheaper than that too - I left my replacement in Aucks on the weekend, and haven't paid for it, I can possibly get it down to the North Shore this weekend. Hard to ship I guess, with the airbag being in it! If someone wants it for $350, they can hand the cash over to Andrew and that'll cover what I owe him ;)B) PM if interested

    Anyone want the 3 spoke?

If I'm correct it's the dual stage air bag wheel, so might only apply to 99/00' and newer cars. Still a cheap wheel for someone.

  16. That's cheap. I sold one of these at auction for around $200 on TM not long ago.

Yea I've seen them go for a lot more but It's what i picked my M-sport wheel up for so just covering my cost. Couldn't believe my eyes!

    sold :)

That has to be the quickest sale I think i've ever had!

  17. Sounds battery related, I know they can cause a limp mode fault in the trans if it's getting low.

Take it somewhere to be load tested and see how it goes.

Yep, i think it's definitely battery related now. Found the date stamp on it this morning, August 2001 haha. I'm impressed it still starts the car.

Was that your M3 at centre city new world yesterday avo BTW? Looking good.
