  1. Got a '96 volvo 850 T5 for the wife to cart kids around in, Had been totally neglected by previous owner who siad it was using half a litre of oil a month. Cause was loose oil filter that was almost falling off. Oil looked like molasses and no service records but the price was right. Put in fresh oil and some stop leak in the power steering and now no more drips on the drive. Nice old car with the full leather, etc, goes like snot and stops very well, a bit rare in 2.0L turbo rather than the 2.3L.

I soon found a 2.3L parts car for $500 nearby with a blown head gasket. Have now decided to have a crack at doing the head and then the cambelts on both. From what i can find online the belts are compatible between these engines??? If anyone has any experience with these motors i would appeciate some tips, looking to order bulk parts through one of the many USA sites offering cheap parts. The local dealer rates are out of the question.

If anyone has the camshaft holding tool set for this model (1996 850 turbo) I would be keen to borrow/rent.

    Try Speed, In your town,

They will help you with parts/tool hireage.

  2. Ponder this:

At the recent Taupo track day i filled up in the morning, during the day emptyed another 20L container into the car. I left on empty thinking i may not make it to the gas station. I drove a whole 180Km on the track for about 75L of petrol. So approx 40L/100Km......

I managed to crack 10L per 100km in my Peugeot on the track :D

  3. I get around 12l/100km on open road, and 15l/100km around town, which I figure is not bad for a 2+ ton V8.

My wife's Legnum VR-4 is lucky to get better than 17l/100km anywhere. It used to average 14l/100km but suddenly changed one month (our fuel card reports monthly fuel consumption). Taken it to Mitsi twice, they can't find anything wrong, so it might be time to get the emmisions checked on it. Any one in Hamilton able to do this?

  4. I haven't done the figures yet 1,185k's on $82.00 diesel, RUC still to be added. The vehicle was a 2002 406HDi 2ltr auto with four adults and their luggae. A trip to Dunedin and four days running back and forth St Kilda to Mosgiel, Airport x2 etc.

You cant do much better than that can ya? I love my 406 for that reason!

  5. um battery is in boot is it not? does the key not work at all in the door? if thats the case then have fun with that.

you could always jump underneath and hook up a spare battery to the starter motor +terminal and the body, that should work.

    I've had this fun before,

    Open boot,

Connect 12v to boot light in correct polarity,

    open drivers door.

    Bingo!

  6. Hey guys,

This is an issue with my girlfriends Holden Vectra (hold your tongues!). The central locking is playing up, when you lock the car the doors lock, unlock, lock and unlock again. Ive checked the central locking fuse, which had blown. After replacing it the problem remains..

Does anyone have any ideas on what to check for? relay or something? Thought Id check the easy stuff before taking to an auto electrician.

I know this isnt BMW related. I just couldnt find any service manuals or forums online for the vectra... I dont think they have the fan base our cars do!

    Cheers for any advice

Replace the drivers door actuator(complete lock/latch unit)

    This will fix the problem.

  7. its probably a little bit sacrilege to say here, but bang for buck i'd go for the S15 Silvia R, super reliable, cheap and easy to maintain yourself, loads of fun to drive and parts are cheap.

just watch out for dodgy nissan ignition coils ^_^

Theres a really nice e46 328i sport coupe at Ezybuy in Auckland atm,

I have driven and inspected it,

They want 7 to 8 k for it

  9. Hey guys,

I have installed xenon lights on my M3 95 and now I get a “low beam light failure†message on my OBC. I was wondering if you could help me to eliminate it. I went through a variety of threads on all sorts of sites. And there are a couple of solutions out there such as cutting the wires for the check control unit, which I don't want to do. There is one, which I am interested in and it is related to the resistance. Normal bulbs are 55w and have a resistance of 4omh if I am not mistaken; apparently the xenon lights have no resistance and are 35w. I have connected them through the battery and relays not to cook my wires in the car. So the current is 12V. So now I need to find out what is the resistance which is taken as “normal†by my on board computer. Then find the correct resistor and plug it in parallel circuit.

Could you guys tell me if I am correct? Maybe there are more solutions to it, apart from taking them off... What size of the resistor I would need and is it going to work?

    I'll really appreciate any help.

    Thanks.

PM me, Have wiring digram to overcome obd message, Fitted HID lights to my 740i, Wow, what a difference.

  10. Rattling sound coming from right front brake area, the sound is like a stone rattling but I cannot find any. The sound stops when I apply pressure on the brakes. Someone has mentioned an anti rattle clip on the calliper, could this be true? 1992 e36 325i

    Hey dude,

    Easy one to fix,

Had this problem in my e36 328i,

Rattle noise, stopped as soon as you applied light pressure to brakes,

turned out to be the pad moving in the caliper carrier.

They were Firepower brake pads, Cheap nasty Sh**.

Replaced them with TRW and noise is gone XD

This could almost be the cheapest fix ever on a BMW hahah
