That would be awesome. I can always come down to Shannon

Yes, welcome James. Your BMWs look really awesomely nice ...you will enjoy the other members' cars as well and should fit right in. And usually I show up in the ugliest looking BMW of all, but nobody ever says anything bad about it...:P

At this point in time we're seriously thinking of going to Shannon, so hope to see and meet you there.

Yeah def replace both the rears at the same time but at those k's they the shocks should still operate well enough unless its had a hard life road wise. Leaving the fronts for some other time if $ is an issue wouldn't be so bad in this case.

The fronts will cost about 2x as much as you are buying the whole strut housing + much longer to remove and install

I have no idea what kind of life this E46 had before my son bought it for us for Christmas 2017 - I am the 2nd owner. The E46 was traded in at Winger BMW here in Wellies end Nov 2017, so my son took it off his manager's hands (yes, my son works at BMW ) and gave it to me. The interior is spotless (9.95 out of 10), the outside is about 9 out of 10.

Thanks again for the advise, I'll see what quotes I'll get from SAS tomorrow for the fronts. ^_^

KYB dont do front gas shocks for the E46 from memory but there gas shocks are reasonable, that said I would go Koni. I have had the STRT shocks on my E36 and they matched the factory M sport springs nicely.

    Thanks John. :)

Not bad pricing, Def Koni street over KYB

How many k's has the car done?, are you doing them for a WOF? Should be able to tell if front shocks have been replaced or not. Shocks are ones of those things you really want to replace all at once if worn otherwise the rear end will tend to show up how bad the front is, vise versa.

Cheers Jared. My 2000 E46 BMW 330i has done just over 87000kms. And no, it is not for WOF (yet). With the last WOF in Dec 2017 they picked up that the left rear shock was leaking, hence the reason why I thought to get both rears and maybe fronts (if the fronts are within my bank overdraft balance) replaced.

  4. I have received the following quotes from SAS: @_ethrty-Andy_...what do you think, which make/set should I go for? My zero-knowledge-of-shocks-brain-cell says the hydraulic ones. Or is the gas ones better? B)

    2 x SHOCKS- KYB HIGH PRESSURE GAS = $277.12

    2 x SHOCKS- KONI HYDRAULIC = $247.74

I have also asked SAS for quotes for front shocks (just in case). I found out that the front arms were replaced by my son beginning of Dec 2017, so not the front shocks as I initially thought.

Rears are easy fronts a bit more effort just do it yourself.

Thanks John, but I don't have the tools, the setup (garage space), or the time. My son will discuss with his mechanics on Tuesday. Fingers crossed...

FCP Euro or Pelicanparts. <$350 (shouldn't be any GST) for OEM Sachs with new shock mounts and bump stops (which you should do also)

Easy to install yourself with basic tools as long as you got a set of axle stands and jack. Plenty of writes ups.

    Thanks Jared. :)

once you've done the rears, you'll realise you need to do the fronts soon.

The rears are very easy to do, particularly if yours is not a Touring.  the Touring has a shitload more interior bodywork you need to disassemble/reassemble to do the job.

here's a fun video to show you just how easy it is on the sedan.   Sadly Jerry has now sold his e46, but he'll tell you how it is.  No BS.  He's awesome.

    Hi Olaf,

The fronts have already been replaced. My son paid for that . As for the video, hardly 3 seconds in I paused it (we have a young child in the house) as this guys is very filthy with his mouth, and I hate it when adults think it is very funny to curse like that :(. Anyhow, I did manage to check 2 other youtube videos and have a rough idea of what will be required by me to do. I don't have all the tools, and time, so will get a few more quotes, buy the shocks, and my son will "twist" the mechanics arms at his work (with a case of beers :P) to see if they will do the job.

  7. Hi Michael,

I'm from South Africa, and there I owned the following BMWs:

1989 E30 325iS manual, 1993 E36 325i (auto, then converted to manual), 1998 E36 328i manual. So, in total only 3 BMWs in my 14 years of driving in SA.

Since coming to NZ more than 10 years ago, I have owned a 1995 325i, then a number of E36 328i BMWs, a 1996 318iS, a 2005 NZ New E46 330i. and now an E30 320i (with M20B25 engine) and another E46 330i. And all were automatic, but I had one converted to manual. So, around 9 BMWs in 10 years and 5 months in NZ. (This should give you an indication how little I really like the Jap imports)

BMWs (in general) from South Africa are better quality, especially their interiors. And I'm talking of personal experience. However, you need to be careful of rust when buying any make of car in SA, especially if the vehicle spend most of its life along the coastal cities (like Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, etc). With that said, I don't have the knowledge to say which (SA or NZ) is best when it comes to the mechanical side of BMWs. But in general, SA BMWs interiors are of a much better quality than the Jap imports. My 2005 NZ New 330 I had here in NZ, was in an awesome condition when I sold it, so it can be that NZ New BMWs are of the same quality as those of their SA counterparts.

Again, this is only my personal experience. I must say though, that my 1996 E36 328i manual that I had back in Johannesburg, was one of the best BMWs I have ever driven...and it was fast, faster than the E46 330s. (I've had many traffic light to traffic light races against E46 330s, and never lost one race. Lastly, in general I am not too happy with NZ BMWs (the only good one with NO issues, was my NZ New 330i and I only sold it because of other idiots opening their car doors and not worrying about other people's cars.).

Hope this helps you a little bit. And sorry that I'm no table to assist with mechanical info.

Finally...if I new then (before coming to NZ) what I know now, I would have brought my 1998 E36 328i over to NZ when we migrated here.

    Cheers,

    Charl

Agree - A manual 850 CSI is on my list of next purchases, dreams are free I supose, as I would need to get it past the Wife.

I know the feeling (about both the 850 and the wife!!). My wife still wants to kill me for buying a 1989 E30 320 auto. I bought it off a lady in CHCH without seeing the car. Had it transported to Jon (auto38) to inspect, ended up having to buy a new engine (was lucky to get an M20B25), new hoses, etc etc. $7000 later and the car is still not drivable. Well, it is drivable, just not safe to drive - exhaust fumes fill up the cabin. Now waiting for new rubber boot seal, and need to replace the dumpy exhaust with stock.

Worst of all...my bank account is $5000 in the red. So yeah...my own freaking fault...:(

    But yes, dreams are free...hehe.

Hire one of those carpet cleaners from the supermarket. I did that once and cleaned my seats in car after doing carpet. Worked well. Remember to adjust your boot with the central adjuster - it may just have been loose

That's good advice, thank you sir. As for the boot, I have already adjusted it, but makes no difference.

Never, ever say that to a parochial south islander such as myself ?

nar , you’re right, I see a lot of stuff I need in the north but the postage is a killer.

i made a killing on the seats, got exactly what I was asking for them! ?

Cheers dude. Only reason why I was thinking of replacing my E30's seats, is because they smell like exhaust fumes. I'm still waiting for the boot seal to arrive from overseas, so I can seal the boot (trunk) and make sure not more exhaust fumes come into the compartment.

...and then I will need to find a way to give the seats a PROPER wash to get the smell out...B)
