It can be black magic deciphering year of manufacture versus model year for a Japanese made car from numbers alone.

Correct, they use chassis numbers instead which are fairly easily decoded (based on my experience with Subaru anyway). Won't give you nowhere the same amount of information that you can extract from BMW VINs though but DOM is definitely there.

Annoyingly I see a few people are trying to put the Model Year thing on their BMWs when selling them, which is BS when there are three lots of updates each year with BMW and MINI.

Yep, pointed that to a dealer I got mine off. Was one of the reasons to knock 10k off the asking price :D

  3. If F series then you can get a cheap as chips ENET cable off ebay and also source ISTA. Will be enough for a recovery, have successfully done so myself when I bricked mine  :)

That is of course if you have time to wait for the cable to arrive.

i may need to go test drive some diesels then.. tbh not sure what im missing but happy to be proven wrong.

Haha I was exactly the same. Just make sure I take something decent.

My first test-drive of a diesel was in a 3.0BiTDI A6, got hooked and  started looking at BMW diesels. Don't think I am going back to petrol any time soon.

But yeah, each to their own.

If you don't mind the idea of diesel, I'd recommend a test drive of the 335d

    +1 for the diesel.

Moved from N55 to N57D and have never had any regrets. The pull is just amazing, 5.5L/100km on an open road is rather awesome too :)

the maximum age of the car is supposed to be two years and still qualfy as a "new" car.

Explains why my late 2012 build is registered as 2014 (when it was sold new).

Thought the registrations were by the year of manufacture, not when a car was actually sold.

C63 AMG - too many idiots hooning in them making a loud noise, high running costs in fuel and tyres etc, again not too many good ones around anymore and a bit too old styling imo

Yep... Was following one through Ponsonby today. "Carbon” wrapped bonnet and no mufflers. I mean no mufflers at all, not even muffler deletes. Looked extremely dumb imho.
