not the bearings, common fault is the cam lobs and rockers that wear and makes them rattle like a bitch. change the head to the unleaded big valve head, performance cam and matched hardened followers with an adjustable pully. sorts it all out and adds BHP.

theres an awfull lot you can do with that engine, i used to race formula 2's and that was the regulation engine, granted alot of restrictions on an f2 but can be boared way out and the rite carbs on it makes it a flying michene for an old engine. if you tinker at it dont slap the twin 40's on it use the 32/36 jetted ot to the max with the linkage of the dgav version that gives you full choke(both butterflys opening together instead of one then the other).. old banger or not you could make a very fun toy. what block is in it,should be imbosed on the side of it.

so far there is only a faint clunk, only noticed it as i work on cars for a living, although be it is mostly common ford pug cit etc uk spec. im gussing it is only on the way out as its faint. normal person probably wouldnt notice it yet so what im getting at is if i left it for now how bad would it get and could it do anything bad to the car. ive only had the car a few months and only ended up with it as a part exchange for an ST Focus so ive decided to keep it as its quite a good car, been well enough looked after but even at that ive just been sorting out the common things that i can come across like the front bushes rear h/brake shoes etc so if i can put it off for i while i will.lol.

thanks for the quick replys, been coming to the conclusion its deeper than the diff,i do maintain the car myself but ive only had it 2 months, checked the clutch travel, drag and play and its perfect so went next to the prop and everything there seams tight and tidy too,so went to the diff its self and its dry with no leaks so looked at the frame and the main mounting points seam to be fine although i havent that much experiance on rear wheel drive. didnt see the top mount as it had started to get dark and i hadnt a light so ill get alook tomorrow,is there any visable signs or ways of testing the top mounts. i take it the mount your talking about must also act as a damper hence somtimes sounding whilst changing gear.

hi i have an e46 320d and when i put the car into gear theres a low clunk noise comes from the rear and also sometimes when changing gear. i asume its the diff so was wondering is there any known faults and or fixes.

correct me if you think differnt but as a standered mic only has a positive and sheilded ground i should get away with only wiring up those 2 pins and if that dont work then put the 3rd pin to the body of the car. thank for the pin outs will be a great help.
-
hi was wondering if anyone has a pinout of the bmw microfone or has managed to wire up a 3.5mm jack to the end of it for an aftermarket fone kit so im able to install origonal mic. basicly i have a mic and finnish grill also the 3 pin plug and i wish to install/solder a 3.5mm jack on to the end but its only 2 wire so am thinking the 3rd wire is for bi-directional pickup or mono/ster sound. if its either then i should be alble to use 2 wires for just mono or for drivers side pick up but would need the pin out to find out.
-
dont suppose you know off hand what pins you go from on the lcm multiplug? also is it only bmw can program the lcm or can the pa-soft bmw software do it as a friend has it and would mean it would be possible then to do all myself. thanks for the responce.

hi all. i have an e46 2000 pre facelift and it only has rear fog lights so was wondering if it is possible to put in a light unit with the front/rear fog switch and wire up the front fogs from there? the fog wiring loom isnt a problem its just a case if im able to use another control unit or not and if any programing needs done or not as alot of e46 systems need programed.

i totaly understand glenn and i know thats what i should do but my main perdicament is i most likly dont have all i would need to do the test and the method, most cars here never need this done and the dealers here is total daylight robbery well over 100 pounds an hour. but i have the doner car which is same year and same spec but a total loss so i have bought it for spares and it runs perfect it sat for 2 months never started so has not got this problem as started it yesterday 1st turn of the key, so i am able to change one part at a time to it stops, also have another car so have no need to drive the bmw also. plus bing new to bmw its perfect opertunity to learn the parts inside out.
-
the dealer prices here are quite expencive compared to most other countrys, i do have a doner car i can borrow parts off if theres any common parts you could suggest to change.

it was only the battery itself i checked whilst out of the car,the alernator i removed and took to a fella that recons them for me and he found it ok but tidyed it up ect for me before refitting so id say its ok. that leaves modules and the heater resistor, is there any that would be more common to cause discharge.??
-
discharge rate from the battery is ok i have a hevy duty tester for diong that and its pritty spot on every time and ive tryed 2 other batterys in the car, ment to say they were both new ones. id be a wee bit to far away from some of you guys, live in nothern ireland,lol.. while looking through the differnt bmw sites this one seamed the best and most helpfull so i signed up.lol.. pluged in to a code reader but nothing came up so ill hada find someone with diagnostics to run checks.. do you know if the carsoft software is any good,if its ok i might buy myself it. thanks.

hey guys new to the site and new to bmw in genral so hope this is posted in the rite place, bought my first bmw an e46 320d but my problem is that if it sits for 2 days then the batterys dead. if i start and give it a drive every day then its slugish to turn over but it starts. i do work on cars but have very little exp on bmw,so i checked the usual suspects, nothing i can find staying on door lights etc,the charge rate from the alternator is good and only about 0.06volt drop down to the battery which is good, discharge from the battery itself is ok plus ive also tryed it with 2 other batterys and sill happens. all in all im a bit stumped as i dont relly know the common faults for this car yet. any help would be great.thanks.

theres supposed to be an awd verson of the focus coming out soon for europe. ill try find out a few definet facs from the ford dealer that i used to work in,a mate in there knows somone in ford motor company that leaks him stuff. the fwd rs focus is rated at 305 hp (0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds) and the awd version si said to be a lot more. tuned chiped etc could make some power house. as for the fwd rs the drift on the steering is awfull once you get to high revs but no where near as bad as the steering on the st focus, ive had one of each and dont lie the front wheel drive at all.
