Oh I forgot to add that the Forum is hosted privately by James.  Who is another OG to the forum.
Most of mods came from just hanging around long enough.  Jon and myself from the early involvement in the BMW race series.  Ollie and Andrew both ran in the BMW series too.

You are not going to find useful car info via dumpster fires like TikTok.  So lets hope people bring their knowledge back to the forums where it can be stored.

without stirring things up, Is there any ideas for the future,  tech moves on, file upload sizes for example, has anyone asked for help or donations.

I know what you mean, but when it’s a response to something they have posted then it becomes a lot more personal. It wasn’t a general “I read this and was offended” type of complaint.

Which is kind of why there are forum rules and guidelines.
As Dan said I think a lot of it was deliberately provocative, which doesn’t always go down well on the internets as it doesn’t always come across as intended.

Always trolls i guess not that  he was really a troll , more always right your an idiot, it did get a bit tiring

I remember during lockdown the board posts swelled as everyone had spare time. the topic of lockdowns went pair shaped and I remember getting pretty annoyed with a few lets say jacinda fans but I realise I'm in a minority in alot of my views but it was eye opening to see how much hatred appeared pretty quickly so get why general topics just don't work

I would never consider contacting a mod though, to actually complain seems too much like cancel culture to me, But nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to the general public

I found this site while searching for e30 info about 20 years ago - pretty sure I bought an e30 door from Driftit. Some great build threads at the time...

Tony (I think?) merging an e30 and an e46. Red with flared arches.

    A 4 door e30 with a super charger - think it was a sc14?

    Was a guy ( Crunchy?) with a boasted e34

    Hybrid's lovely e30 with a S52 swap.

    cool thanks for sharing

  6. Here ya go ya old farts

The “Green Thing” Back in My Day

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to me I should bring my own shopping bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.

I apologized and explained, “We didn’t have this green thing back in my earlier days.”

The cashier responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.”

She was right — our generation didn’t have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in every shop and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

Back then, we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts — wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that young lady is right. We didn’t have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV or radio in the house — not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief — remember them? — not a screen the size of the county.

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the post, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she’s right. We didn’t have the green thing back then.

We drank water from a fountain or a tap when we were thirsty instead of demanding a plastic bottle flown in from another country. We accepted that a lot of food was seasonal and didn’t expect it to be flown in from other parts of the world thousands of kilometers away.

We actually cooked food that didn’t come out of a packet, tin or plastic wrap and we could even wash our own vegetables and chop our own salad. But we didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mothers into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then?

Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart-ass young person.

We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to … Especially from a tattooed, multiple pierced smartass who can't make change without the cash register telling them how much.

Seemed to rub a lot of other members up the wrong way. After a temporary ban from posting managed to get another raft of complaints as soon as he posted again.

When I mentioned this to him he didn’t want to be “part of a toxic forum”.

really? you actually had complaints wow, kinda don't blame him then. I don't get why people if they don't like it can't just skip on,  no one forces you to read a post and then be offended

  8. Awfully quiet round here over the hols, although there seems to have been a gradually dropoff for a while on posts and topics.bloody facebook I assume.

Just curious to know how this place works and evolved, nothing sinister or competitive or personal, just I check this and a few other forums every day and know whats required to run, moderate and fund a board so after only being here for probably 10-15 years I wondered how it all started and its owners history's.

When I started there were really helpful sponsors and contacts which were great but overseas shipping cut into their business models too much I suspect. People on here, I've always found there seems to be an unwritten law you didn't scam or cheat anyone, I got alot of really helpful  info from people like jochen back in the day but with the newer cars things have moved on and I guess less things you can actually  do yourself so the value of knowledge helping others becomes less needed. Still plenty of old Bmws out there though and there's some really great info in posts of decades ago here so it would be a shame if they were ever deleted from the internet

I miss builds from HellBM, peoples lapvideos of track days, some characters like Ron whom after seldom agreeing with, I still  liked their different way of thinking and knowledge. There's some still some impressive builds here on now, which are amazing that people take the time to photo and document everything. This seems to be a very car only forum unlike some others that include alot more off-topic threads which is fine but it does create less banter I suspect.Perhaps I'm just old but I prefer a forum to a facebook group.

anyone still lurking around from the old days?

By the same logic you should replace them every 5k to 10k kilometers or within 2 years as the performance of a tyre drops off significantly once worn and aged, you wouldn't want to compromise your safety would you?  There was a tyre reviews video which demonstrated a worn Michelin was significantly worse than a new budget tyre.

Regarding the triangle noise, I think I agree, the Laufenns were quite noisey as well.  The FRD26 seems pretty quiet though.

Everyone has their priorities, as a daily driver not doing any spirited driving I am happy with the performance of my budget tyres and I think they have come a long way in the last 10 years.  If I was still interested in pushing the boundaries I would look at something higher grade.  I'm also buying in the 19/20" sizes and the difference in price is huge.  Think $800 a set instead of $2400.

priorities, exactly, don't think anyone was every arguing otherwise but most of us have experienced a tyre that wasn't up to scratch by the sounds of it, and have a few we'd recommend there's some pretty dodgy stuff out there so hopefully someone finds this useful and it may even save a life, although you would never know or could prove it

  11. think your making hard work of your meter to be honest,

make sure you get 12v across your battery to confirm you even have the meter on the right setting first, probably says 40v or something similar, needs to be over 12v for sure

all meters have a loop test circuit, you won't do any damage if you change the dial, hold leads together and fiddle until you find it as I can't quite see from pic

make sure you understand the pin numbering is being reversed because your looking at the back of the plug,

playing with something like a staple in the back of a plug is asking for fuse blows, just too small and fiddly

try stripping a piece of wire or maybe a paperclip wrap it around the red probe 3 or 4 times tight with a 20mm extension so its tight/firm on the red probe then you have a  smaller point to insert into plug

and use black probe to earth somewhere near on the roof so the two leads arn't side by side and can touch and blow the fuse by mistake

confirm your earth lead is  actually earthed by checking for a loop between two metal points on car, door hinges are usually good points for earth

one of those wires in the mirror plug has 12 volts so if you can't find it your not connecting correctly

lastly I would have thought if you have used lighter circuit before you already know those wires so no lead required

BTW pack of 100 assorted fuses is like $5 ON AliExpress , always have a pack handy

I have had a few cheap tyres now and few/no issues, used to be a bit of a tyre snob.  Biggest issues I have had with tyres is age and i feel anyone complaining about grip levels should check the date stamp on their tyres.  I could be wrong but I suspect the main issue with the OP is that they're all season and age.

Currently I'm running Farroad FRD26 and Blacklion HU02 which came on my car/wheels.  Have had Triangle TH201 and Atturo AZ850 as well and they were fine.  With that said I rarely drive spiritedly anymore as sadly the 535i and 330e just aren't worth bothering in that regard.

I have an inkling that the new Triangle TH202 is probably a decent buy at present.

I've gone the other way, had triangles 20s on my 535wagon purely cost driven they were under 200 ea and when I finally changed, the noise at anything over 70km disappeared, it was shocking as I never realised it was the tyres that were doing it as they had been on when purchased, lasted well but were not good in the wet at all which I think is the issue with most of the cheapies, built for chinese concrete at low speeds as per their countrys experiences,I think the age thing is probably more apparant too with more plastics and possibly because they just last longer, A better tyre that lasts 30,000 k tops is hardly going to be old before its shot, yes they fill the rim low profile and look the part , some are alot better than others and you need to brand research and I would put them on my familys cars but I've reached a stage where i can afford and appreciate the difference now, up to a point that is, My current 4wheel drive commodore came factory spec with ps4 and its so good it would be criminal to even consider going lower spec.

What was the reasoning? From what i saw the decreased wear rate was the main selling point. I know the grip was suppose to be slightly improved too but you probably couldn't tell them different unless you had measuring equipment. I went thru 2 sets of PS4's on my old E39 530i and they only lasted me 25-30,000km but wasnt easy on them. PS4 have a ST version too which is suppose to be quieter\softer than the regular

RE003 used to be my go to but the only area i found RE003's found superior to the PS4's was steering feel\response. They were cheaper than RE003 for ages, maybe still are?. They are still plenty capable but are quite old entry level tech now with Bridgestone having quite replacements.

can't remember exact details but think it was possibly value for buck over such a small gain or basically unproven gain, you would have to expect any good handling tyre is probably only goiing to last 25-30 on our tight single lane rough chip roads realistically

you want longer you compromise and go to a harder material and denser tread pattern

    no stripping for taps

the pinouts are in there but your on the wrong page there, its not an easy thing to browse but its in there somewhere, if you find the module number of the plug you can search for it

brown is definitely common for earth but not guaranteed ,put your mutlimeter in buzzer mode for loop testing i(t will make a noise when you touch leads together) and you can check the brown wire to a metal part of body or car, if ir makes a noise its connected,

make sure you test between two metal parts of the car first to check your actually touching metal not paint, confirm you are touching a good earth

for power set multimeter  to dc volts probably something like 40v on the tool and look for a 12 v reading when the other lead is connected to the car body metal, test with key on and off , be aware alot of circuits don't go to sleep immediately when the key is off so make sure car has powered down and leave window open as opening the door will wake up some circuits

Yep everything has gone up. Advantage (Beaurepairs) price for a Michellin PS5 225/40R18 on Nov 2022 was $360-70 and now $406 ($456 non special). PS4's at the time were around $300 iirc. Bigger sizes seem to have gone up even more. Hyper had 225/45R17 PS4's $240-$260 deals for years. A PS5 is now $317 or $365 (no special) at Advantage. Really need trade discounts now.

Guess ive been lucky paying around $250 a tyre for decades.

most reviews Ive read recently when looking ps4 was the preferred even over the ps5, never had any issues with re003 personally and has been the goto for me but price has jumped now, noise is the big issue for me and obviously want some good life which is an oxymoron to wanting a soft grippy tyre

hands down the current ps4s 20" are the best tyre Ive ever owned/albeit inherited with the car but can I justify the price next time  not sure

to judge a tyre because you once slipped on a corner on holiday which was probably spilt diesel anyway seems a bit OTT, In Hb our roads are sh*t with potholes and rough chip so totally different to people travelling expressways at 110 km where noise will be totally different.

Both PS4s and re003 handle the taupo road at license losing speeds with absolute ease which is a good enough test for me

Safety is something we take for granted here in NZ, it seems a majority are upset because someone has some colours on and uses bad language, or a 13 year old does a wheely past on a dirt bike or ram raids a shop that sells tobaco, vapes and meth pipes...

that's possibly a good thing Because it has to start somewhere, and attitudes snowball quickly, when BLM can raze entire city blocks to the ground I think the different protest groups we are dividing into are going to be the issue going forward, We were always 20 years behind the latest overseas craziness but that is changing

safety also disappears in an instant if the countries economics sink, look at the fall of  Venezuela, it can happen quickly.

Immigration has made europe eat itself so hopefully we can learn from that

long may we be simple and moan about small issues please

  17. You will probably laugh but seriously take a zb last model euro commodore wagon or hatchback for a test run, massive boot space the 2.0 turbo has ample power and great on fuel and the v6 is really impressive ,alot of car for the money, couple of differing spec and price points  and being euro they actually handle and drive well, reasonably simple to fix and there are parts as they are rebadged opels and buicks

underated and usually laughed off but take one for a drive, theres some good prices and low mileages around, the vxr is awesome and easily outspecs the 5 series

  18. I hate the ones who when I'm daily turning right off a main busy road into our  side street and am sitting on the white line waiting for a gap , they suddenly decide to be helpful and stop as they approach to let you through holding up all those behind and nearly causing nose to tails , completely against all road laws and just stupid dangerous, and there's always a gap about 2 cars behind them which you had already seen and anticipated, wife says there just being nice but I just wish they actually drove sanely and consistently. none of them ever look or aware of whats behind, I can forgive an obvious occasional gradual slow down from a long way back and even  a headlight flash to give you the nod but otherwise they get the evil stare
