  1. IMHO

I was young once and thought it had to be manual, but you grow out of it, practicality in a city, stop start traffic it just makes no sense and its no slight on your mad driving skills to actually own and drive an auto. It doesn't suddenly mean you don't know how to drive a manual.

especially I don't think manual diesel makes a lot of sense either, aren't the autos like 8 speed so better matched but the whole point of diesel is torque and lower effortless revs

for a weekend toy, sure manual is way more fun, just buy a s2000 or something

No, the last time I wrote to BMW was in in the early 90's and I got a invite to their Mt Wellington headquarters. That was cool of them to do. They send pens to people they don't have time for.

And I don't disagree with their technical documents but we've already established that. It was a suggestion for people like you who claim to know better than BMW themselves. ?

what part of their disclaimer do you not understand

  3. on paper it looks ok here it you kinda squint a little , if its like the new cars though to see it in person, not so much, too much shiny chrome especially on the bonnet face, i suspect those dots will look too obvious 3d(ish) in real life

Another stupid  un-feature of the same highlander was it's keyless entry / locking system so

Rock up to the paddock down the road , jump out and lock the car, check the door handle to confirm it's locked and it unlocks - Solution:

Rock up to the paddock gate lock the car - chuck the key at least 30 metres into the next paddock then check the handle - bugger left the phone in the  car - walk 30 metres into the paddock spend 20 minutes looking for the key - put the key back in the vehicle parked on the side of the road and hope someone steels the useless POS

have to disagree with that one, its just your insecurity that you check the handle, I love keyless entry, key fob only comes out of pocket when pants are changed and wifes is somewhere in the bottomless pit of a handbag, its so nice to never have to fumble for a key, you can here it lock anyway

fully agree, @Herbmiester.  Mine listens on the band they're broadcasting on, alerts me of revenue gathering and prompts me to check my speed.  My preference is to concentrate on the traffic and road conditions around me as my active contribution to road safety, rather than constantly checking my speedo and using the brake for compliance correction.

recommendations please, has the technology changed?

  6. every time I went up to the big smoke for the day I'd be taking extra fuel cans then. Got caught a little short coming home and had to top up in taupo recently, just put the bare $20 to make the gauge safer because they were pretty OTT as well. poor boaties they would make a killing filling boats

  7. just up the road from you graham in Hastings

all the gas here is still about 11c more for 95 than 91which has crept up from the 9c difference it used to be

there has been some obvious changes around though Z which are next door to Pakn save used to match price now they don't bother.Havelock North 10km down the road is 20-30 dearer

Hastings Pak n Save 95 is 1.86 and you can 6 c off that again, Z is 205 and 60 m away on the same side of the road

Napier Pak n Save is 1.77 for 95 and you can get 6 cents off there is also gull but you don't need it when the others are behaving

    • Thanks 1

  8. after fitting an android unit to another car the big issue for me is, car left parked all day and unit overheating, on a summers day I have nothing till aircon cools the unit down enough for it to even boot up and mine is mounted mid dash, so hot as to be burnt fingers screen glass hot.

are you saying the dash screen unit is actually the android unit so basically an android tablet with external connectors.? I'd be very concerned with heat affecting it although  guess it was built for the purpose as opposed to a custom hack job like mine

  9. pick up the basics  from reading manuals, and then apply them calmly, routinely, in a high stress "assumed first and only time situation" are two different things, but yes ,not to be discussed in public so ending it now

agree with you on the rogue aspect, plenty of very young angry school shooters in USA and that culture is what is aspired/copied here so its only a matter of time I guess and who doesn't know how to get into their dads gun cabinet. The job prospects of the  future and the destructive nature of our race baiting press, are going to make a lot of disenfranchised youth for sure but I still don't think you can legislate the problem away or it was justified at the time.

Agree entirely  with posts above it just needs an independent body that sole job is to control that, not the police who move funds around as needed and have become political assets to be abused by gvnmts

  10. self taught? you don't get those disciplined habits as easily seen in the video footage playing call of duty,  he was well trained in combat

More generally, this highlights an issue with any legal licensing system, those who would pass whatever checks and don't have a history of violence etc will tend to be granted licenses.

not sure thats correct in this case, the history checks and sponsor checks just weren't done but yes the type of weapon is irrelevant. Most terrorism in UK is now done in trucks not with assault weapons. can't ban trucks

That's debatable.  One can easily argue that even if his application was processed correctly, he could have still obtained the licence -

sorry but your first line is completely wrong, he was never legally entitled, fullstop, you obviously have not understood all the criteria for a license, reread the entire thread, its all been covered , quite specific and simple laws weren't followed, pure human error hence the thread title.

also the gun range owner story has been fact checked and was discredited

the law changes have not made a bit of difference to public safety, there were no cracks to tighten in the law, only the execution of it

The Christchurch attack exposed the fact that the Gun laws were way too relaxed in NZ.

think the point went straight over your head

the existing gun laws, if followed correctly by police would have stopped him obtaining those weapons

it was human error not a law issue

On my first trip to Europe I spent a lot of time in major cities and started to miss the colour green, weird I know but it's something you take for granted.

I thought singapore was beautifully green, every drab bit of concrete , even motorway overpasses had flower gardens etc, bloody impressive and so clean

Have to call you on that one. 5m masks released from central repository yesterday, all rest homes locked down and no staff movement between them, 16 new fixed and mobile testing stations in the last 24h fully staffed with trained teams, 9 effective roadblocks sealing a city.

All of that is an improvement and in many cases they've hit the right standards. Perfect? No. Better? Yes.

I get your point but 5m  masks means nothing really, if its even believable re the flu vaccines and PPE debarcle etc.

it won't stop a virus, the jury is still out on even their effectiveness, 1 hour tops for disposable then they need to be basically incinerated to be safe and thats n95 grade only not converted socks like on 7 sharp last night,

roadblocks are just reactionary, necessary granted but hardly planned for, possibly even illegal under current leg.

mobile testing, can't see how that helps TBH queues of people getting tested with no symptoms, no contact with anyone dangerous, just wasting everyones time

resthomes great, well done if its done correctly otherwise as useless as not testing customs staff, bus drivers, air hostesses etc

have they set up special wards to enable hospitals to carry on with their elective surgeries etc ,  treating the covid at same time,

without tossing nearly everyone else out to keep beds clear. got more respirators in for the inevitiable, those sorts of things

We have the advantage of hindsight and other countries experience now as we have delayed our outcomes so far. just hope we have learnt and prepared,

    not convinced entirely tho

History shows agricultural exports to be a very safe ecomomic option. NZ is in a particularly good position to provide the world with high quality food due to our climate (we don't even feature in the global top 10 for agritech, despite the size of agriculture as a percent of our GDP), legislation being the main barrier to fast growth in this area. Let's face it, the world is always going to need to eat.

world wars will be over fresh water supplies in the not too distant future

China have an economic victory over the entire world at this point and there isn't a military in the world right nowthat could stop China doing what it wants militarily in the Western Pacific.... realities to keep one up at night ...

chinas economy is extremely fragile, they are terrified, they are under far more stress internally than countries like USA, things can go very pear shaped very fast for china and they know that.its happened before, they have a lot of mouths to feed. its all an act

I know, I'm being a little glib there with the batch thing.

Totally agree, we are in a very different position with COVID...but I don't have any doubt the outcome would have been the same as the US, UK or similar to what is now being seen in VIC and NSW if we had gone the same way. UK and US being severe examples, Brazil and India being totally extreme.

Where NZ is very different is that the ICU capacity is alarmingly small...I work around the health sector here and the genuine sense of relief that ICUs were not swamped (and the extra deaths caused by lack of ICU spaces, heart attacks etc etc) was palpable.

I do have sympathy for destroyed businesses and livelihoods....but there is some confidence that many thousands of lives have been saved. I for one am glad I'm not the person/people who have to put dollars on one side of the scale and human lives on the other.

so what has been done icu wise to prepare for the inevitable relapses or outbreaks, have they set up emergency preparations , ppe gear, done any work on isolating rest homes properly if it became needed, set up teams of people ready and trained in what to do because it looks like nothing has changed since the first day we went in to lockdown. hospitals went back to normal business and we don't appear any more ready than we were the first time

with all the knowledge learnt from other countries experiences what have we done to prepare for this time

Im no conspiracy nut, but I'm starting to think there is way more to this than meets the eye. Big power shifts are happening.

Vanuatu must be close to defaulting on their chinese loans due to covid ending tourism, which means china essentially own em, they already have clandestine presence in the pacific and this will just make it formal.

If Taiwan gets invaded (sep/oct is apparently the best Wx), the chinese then have a clear run down through micronesia into the pacific.....

    /tinfoil hat off.
