I used to work with a Volunteer firefighter, and they were told that any Hybrid or EV that crashed and was seriously damaged, they had to wait an hour before they could touch it to save an occupant. They literally have to stand there, watching the car burn as the occupant screams at them for help. I cant see that happening, but thats what the bigwigs have told them to do.

There is no standardised way to disconnect the HV side of the battery and make it safe. Manufacturers do make the information available, but who is going to sit there on their phone, watching someone burn to death, searching a site looking for the required information on each and every car?

I'm sure hurdles can be overcome, but until they are it's not going to be pretty. Like cars before seatbelts and airbags.

Low k's but maybe high hours, either way it's still 15 years old and probably on all original parts.

    Correct

A lot of servicing would have not been done yet.

Only benefit of low kms is potentially less wear and tear as its been used less.

Seals, hoses, gaskets still need replacing though 15 years is a while!

  3. Ask for a pay rise at work, or come up  with a ways to make more money to offset such fuel increase.

Everything is getting more expensive, so you have to respond in kind.

Smartest thing to do would be to buy a straight 6, V8 or V12 and enjoy yourself, paid for by new revenue streams. At the end of the day it's the journey that counts, not not the destination.

I have three V8s now and a one diesel. More will be added in due course. Life is good.

I wonder if EVs are 'easier' on roads than ICE vehicles? 🤔

That would be a very large no. Generally from what I've seen an electric version of a car is 500-750kg more weight than it's petrol or diesel equivalent. Cars have gotten heavier with more tech over the years, but on top the the batteries have added huge amounts of weight that will be harder on the road, and wear out tyres faster. The instant torque if used repeatedly on the same piece of road would likely rip it up faster than what any petrol or diesel car could do.

Electric cars should have the weight factored in as well at lack of fuel taxes they are paying when calculating a RUC

I suspect car crashes are also going to be much more catastrophic in future too given the extra weight and potential for a battery fire that can't be easily put out. Perhaps ACC levies for electric cars should also be higher. There needs to be some redirected funding that would need to go to the fire crews having to learn new methods and buy new equipment to deal with such lithium blazes, as well as be trained on the electrocution risks

  4. Just pondering about what the legality and issues might be when people make those replica police cars - obviously local AU / NZ ones are a no go, but overseas models that are older and clearly not typical police cars local to the area seem to be made occasionally.

I understand a car saying "police" is not allowed, nor flashing lights, and the lights are typically needed to be covered when the car is driven on the public road but does anyone have anymore guidance / opinion on such.

    Cheers!

I’m sure that’s just one “hope” that the business has in its plans. I certainly hope they do keep supplying parts for all ICE models in years to come…

I see Nissan with their Nismo heritage program is now making a new OEM spec titanium exhaust for R32 GT-R models

No doubt that would cost moonbeams, but still it's nice to see the dedication some manufactures are putting in

FCP Euro and Fed Ex who I've never had take more than a week to arrive, have had my package stuck in AKL containing all my most awaited Holiday project goodies for a week and a half and no update.

Meanwhile DHL got my new Radio from Estonia to Auckland in 2 days...

Fedex has been super screwed up in recent months due to the industrial strike they had in Australia, its been slow ever since, I've had a number of slow items, and they usually took a week.

  7. I hate the vibe of old tyres, just not worth the risk of getting dodgy ones. They might roll and hold air, and grip ok, but under extremes of emergency braking, cornering in the wet etc tyres that are loosing their performance edge due to age can fail to work as efficiently so  it makes sense to just spend the extra and get a fresh set.

You might want to read up on what’s new in the automotive world, things have moved on quite a bit, especially in the world of interior finishes and technology. Sustainability is a big thing now and 90s plastics are no longer in vogue.

Oh right, I only read car magazines and things from the 1950 to 1990s as that is all I'm interested in. I like to fix & drive old cars so would never buy anything new, plus they're out of my price range.

It’s the iX which will be BMWs technology flagship for the next while. It does have a minimalist design approach inside yes but material quality is better than the 7-series and it’s priced to match, starting at $163900 for the xdrive40 model. Size wise its comparable to the x5 (a little longer, slightly narrower). The old i3 has nothing on this.

Oh right wow I thought it was a Nissan Leaf competitor. Price suggests otherwise! wow

Dude what are you on about?

I'm just confused at what spec this car is, is it one of BMWs new economy electric cars? Looking at the design it seems like they are going for a lower cost minimalist approach to make them cheaper for the mass market, are they more affordable than previous electric models?
