what ecu setup you gonna use , you gonna run the variable quad vanos setup etc??
Dumping the Vanos dial the cams in to where i want them, ecu wise either Motec or Haltech ( already have a few ) or Petal
Vanos pump and rod bearings are a issue with them, loss a vanos pump loss a motor the main pump is driven off the vanos unit they also rob a bunch of power to run at 1500psi, half the time apart from some torque gains vanos is more for emissions

What is it? A naked S85B50?
Yep pretty much late model V10 i already have a few spare boxes and a triple plate clutch itll use a aftermarket ecu

Is that... a v10?!
Might add a pair of turbos yet, but kinda like that sound with no air box 10x trumpets and 2x 3" exhaust
Going from a 1900kg to a 1350kg should go ok maybe

Depends what you want really. If you're expecting every last hp & tq extracted from an engine with zero real input from you then the high end systems are what you want. Personally I've learned a metric sh*t-ton about 4 stroke EFI piston engines in the last few months and I haven't physically started with my M54 swap yet.
If you wish to deliver your car to someone and haven them do all the work then there are multitudes of options available, all with their respective gains and downfalls.
If you want to learn and don't mind applying a little effort then consider an MS. No you probably won't end up with a polished pro result but there's massive satisfaction in building something as opposed to just buying it
That oughta fling the cat amongst the pigeons!
Your right you do learn....and that comes at a cost
People are great advise givers on forums " go on mate it'll be fine" or " give it a crack you'll learn things"
Then when it all turns to poo we get " ah dam sorry dude, oh well nice day today" cause its not their hard earned money.
There's good reason for spending just that tad more you get support from those who deal with A units day to day, you don't need to know how to put a ecu together it was done so by the pro's, having a perspective of its cheap doesn't mean its good.
Like this person here hes on a budget and its long term so saving that little extra to get a better product isn't a bad deal, mates are great at giving advise ( to which they seldom take themselves ) until it turns to custody they tend to hide.
Cheap motor or trying to learn it still costs when it goes bang, the motor decides what you get not the calculator

Im out of my depth here and no experience, but interested to know:
do Haltech and Link etc have options for our BMWs? i.e. do they have the BMW plug receptical on them or do you have to modify factory loom to mate onto their respective proprietary plug?
All my installs i do wire in mainly for the reason you end up with new wiring helps to avoid little things that pop up that you send hours chasing.
The Haltech has no issues decoding the 60-2 many ecu's do, as plug and play ive never asked most of my customers are not fussed about OEM frilly bits just more go
-
As stated above the MS does and can give issue's when put together or installed wrong, MS was targeted at the DIY guy to learn some skills thus that creates down falls.
However aftermarket Ecu's are put together by pro's and come with a warranty plus install guidelines, its all about how deep your wallet is.
MS goes for around 800? you can get entry level Haltech's for 1200 all depends on your perspective on cost, but MS has its place like may other products

Nah, but it'd be freakin funny!
If what i have played pans out itll be a sleeper

And a Z3 to put it in???
LOL you offering Alan ?
Not sure yet motors at the right price and needs some work, whatever it goes in you'll hear it coming !

There is always going to be a better engine choice. Heck I'd love an LF-A V10 engine, but its not going to happen!
Plenty of cheap good engines from the 90s to use, and because they're cheap at least it's achievable
I say go for a M73 V12 5.4
It will be unique in a 3 series and go beautifully with over 320hp / 490nm. Mount it far back as possible and you'll have a great setup. To keep costs down the stock 5 speed auto will do the trick nicely too.
Watch this space re: V10

Why don't you tube frame the front of your Pajero, dual shocks, and add a couple steering dampeners while you're at it? Urethane bushes and standard control arms are old technology.
Going with your approach here - "why bother".
Turd, polish etc.
And we have check mate !
Got to love some of the gifted people in this place a Ash

The V12 is a lot heavier plus it is longer and it is old technology.
---- For those who want to poke a stick or finger it is a reasonable choice.
-----For those who want performance and 'wow' factor there are better options.
The V12 was Superceded by the V8 for good reasons - like it is shorter lighter and produces more power .
And Michael, NO its his project and I am just offering my opinion along with some useful facts ( just like many others on the forum), think the compact version was called a K55
Crunchies approach for this one is "why not" where as mine is "why bother" - the reason I own BMW's is because they handle, if I wanted a front heavy wallowing hot rod - I would look at some yank iron or a Holden.
The reason I have just ripped out the front suspension of my Pajero, modified the upper control arms changed the ball joints and am fitting urethane bushes into the idler and the arms is to sharpen it up and make it handle- that's my bent.
Same with fitting Ohlins to the bike , extracting another 10kW and stripping 10kg of surplus weight out of it.
Bottom line, its not your money Danger can do as he pleases

Theres many reasons to do these things
1, Cause you can
2, Cause you want to
3, To own something different
4, To get up nose's of other BMW owners ( top of the list for me ) gives them something to cry over on forums.
5, Its your ride you pay the bills, and it makes you happy to do so.
6, Cause you can say " i did it "
You-tube is your friend when its comes to conversions people are always keen to show off.

Scarles sometimes do great deals on D2 last set i got were 950 front and rear
-
The V10 is far from cheap the ones ive looked are around the 12-16knz plus getting them here plus a box behind it, LS or V12 would be by far cheaper.
I know its been done before but M60 is pretty cheap someone on here has one going for 1k i think
