118d F20 JPN has No iDrive after software update by BMW
Only118d posted a topic in Electrical system
I have recently acquired a “Japanese” import BMW 118d (F20 2016) which has now lost its iDrive readout. And I am new to BMWs and Bimmersport and cars build this century…. So I am looking for help to fix this and posting as a warning to others, assuming you don’t already know all about this……. After taking the 118d to Continental Cars BMW in Wairau in Auckland for two (2) recalls as checked and reported on the BMW NZ recall website. >> The EGR Cooler fix (I know the why’s and wherefores for this). >> And a software update. (and I am not sure what this would do and CC-BMW couldn’t tell me, although I now know it ruins the iDrive). CC-BMW made me sign a waiver regards the software update so I really should of said no…… but you assume the best I guess. On collecting the car I was informed the head unit / radio and GPS /navigation no longer works. On checking the car there is no iDrive display/information at all and the screen only says “no signal” in red letters in the middle of the screen. On raising this with CC-BMW they have advised taking the car to “OBDTech NZ” in Penrose who are “likely” to restore the iDrive system. On doing a bit of research on the WWW it appears this is a common issue on Japanese import BMWs that have the radio and navigation updated locally for NZ. Apparently other BMW dealers recommends not doing any software updates on similar cars for this reason. On checking with “Auto Gravity” (who are local Japanese import vehicle conversion specialists) they informed me this is common on the imported 1 series (and others?) when the software is upgraded by BMW after the NZ Radio/GPS updates. Apparently the pre 2014 models just lose the maps. Post 2014 lose everything. Hopefully I have quoted this correctly. I have tried rebooting the iDrive system multiple times (holding mode and on/off button for 30s) which does seem to reboot the system but it still comes up with “no signal” on the screen. I am guessing the iDrive system needs the head unit “reflashed” using a dealer level tool (or some other witchcraft)……….. quoting a guy from the UK on the www. So can anyone please help with getting my iDrive back? The radio and navigation is a low priority as I will probably just use my phone for google maps and music etc. So are any of these possible or could work: 1. Is there anyone in Bimmersport World who can help with this in Auckland (or the North Island)? 2. Can anyone recommend either OBDTech or Auto Gravity to help (or anywhere else)? 3. Are there other ways to access the iDrive system, remotely? I can’t get “My BMW” to work as the car is from Japan also. 4. Any other clever tricks that might help? Thanks in advance and sorry if this has all been posted and answered previously. -
Hi everyone. Looking for some help here is anyone has run across this before. For background I have a 2000/9 E39 touring Japanese import. I replaced the Nav with a MKIII and the radio with a BM24. I coded the nav using NavCoder and It all seems to work OK (or did for maybe 6 months). What I get now is when starting the car, the orange light comes on and maybe 50% of the time no sound. If I turn the radio off and back on it usually (not always) works. However, sometimes the orange light comes on and the radio fires up right away. Most of the time the orange light does not come back on and maybe 30-60 seconds later the radio comes to life. If I have the screen on GPS it flicks to the radio screen when pushing the power, even when the orange light doesn't show up, so I know it has "recognised" the power on. Then after the delay, the radio comes on. Pushing any other buttons are also delayed - e.g. the tone will pop up maybe 30 seconds after it is pushed. I have a second BM24 and it behaves the same way. I am thinking the amp? Or maybe the Nav is doing something weird? This car to be fair feels strange though. I had a modlight 3 in my e38 which worked no problem. In this car it works, but prevents the car going to sleep so drains the battery. Starting to think maybe something is spewing data onto the canbus network or similar??? Cheers Ken

Hi all, any suggestions on where I can source a radio unlock code for a 1997 Z3? BMW in NZ no longer store the details, considering the car too old now. TIA W

Hi there, I have an E46 and the sound system has an issue. It will play the radio just fine for about 30 minutes, but then the front and rear woofers cut out all at once, and then not long after, the rest of the speakers all cut out too. I got home and left the car off for about half an hour, and the sound all came back. Has anyone else had this issue? Is it likely to be the amplifier chips overheating or something? If so, where is the best place to get a replacement? Thanks.

Now this is odd. I bought a BM54 from eBay. Works 100% OK, except it flattens my battery overnight, so lets say 10 hours. I think I've checked common issues etc, but am somewhat bamboozled. Here's what I know/have checked: Current through fuse F69 is zero, 15 seconds after key off. I haven't monitored it beyond that. Car does appear to be going into sleep mode, 16 minutes after locking car, as I can see gear selector light go off. Only my BM54 does this. I have 4 other radios, none have this issue, even after a week. Disconnecting the BM54 connector prevents this issue. Alternator works great, voltage at battery when running is approx 14.2V, battery charges up again no problems. Nothing else to suggest any electrical problems with car. I see repairers offering BM54 repair service that include for flattening battery issue - don't have any further details. Anyone got any ideas? Must be a good handful of amps to flatten battery overnight, so all I can think of is something 'waking up' periodically, but only when that radio is connected. Considering using the switched 12V to supply the radio too, to see if that makes any difference.

Today I had my firmware upgrade on my 2009 BMW 135I to be like a NZ new model and replace the japan software that it had on it. Everything went fine and I got radio + Navigation through a place in town which does work for our local BMW franchisee. However, on driving away the sound quality was really poor (No bass and really quiet) and the radio reception was really poor....my gut feeling from putting in older style radios in older style cars, was cables were in backwards or similar, but the electrician assured me that could happen with this. He is getting some software/computer to do some testing on Monday...but really interested to know what your thoughts are on this and what may have caused it?
