Cold Running Problem

Recommended Posts

yeah i rebuilt the head...didnt realise valve clearances changed after initial setup..car was running fine for a good week or two after doing the head without touching the valve clearances again so i would imagine they are ok?

taking it to mechanic tomorrow if i cant fix it before then!

Yes they can. Had it happen heaps...sometimes after only a short time running....Its a must to recheck...especially doin retail work

dead cold...10 thous at the valve...not the camshaft and make sure y'r exactly on the back of the cam opposite the lobe... do it in firing order 153624....inlet first then exhaust...easier that way and accurate

10 thou [thats a fine imperial measurement], You might need the services of your Eight Inch Cresent instead of your Ballpeen Hammer

Glenn, Gus has a shrick? cam, he would have to be careful he doesn't set clearances too tight. Not sure what cam it is though.

Gus, start the car in the dark, pref pitch black inside garage, and look for spark tracking, it will be very obvious.

The other thing is to check that your injectors are getting a constant signal to fire, use a long screwdriver or piece of thin rigid tube, hold it against each injector body while the car is running and listen on the other end for a regular tick as it fires.

Whatever you do, don't let Kerry near, after all he is used to working on large american things that have no finesse, just need 14lb sledge hammer, 26"crescent (american micrometer) and gas axe to fix, adjust, fine tune etc..

adjusted clearances...car does run a lot better...still got the annoying misfire...its almost a shudder that is constant throughout rev range. like its running on 4-5 cylinders. put another set of plugs in and these arent carboned up (well 3 so far arent..havent checked the rest)

cant see any sparking will, not in pitch dark

kinda hard to do the injector thing as the engine is lumpy anyway..seems like #5 MAY be not buzzing, but is really hard to distinguish from the rest of the engine

going to gavin bellar tomorrow so will have to see how he gets on, i dont have time any more...bugger!

Injectors should tick, not buzz, that's for beez, so if they are beezing, bin them.

after all that was just the AFM, and a dodgy spark plug wire

so now just need an AFM (anyone has anything cheaper than $70??)
