1987 BMW e30 M3

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the forum, but i've been on a few other BMW sites. Thought it was about time to get on board and post on Bimmersport.

Im in the process of re-building my e30 M3.

Bought the car in from Japan last year in August and LTSA lawa meant i couldn't road register the car. So i shipped the car down to my an engine builder in Invercargille to change to RHD.

Once i heard that the law change from LTSA had passed public submission i decided it was better to keep LHD and put the mony into other parts of the car until i know for sure if i can register my car LHD one day..

Started out stripping the engine + interior. Body was in good condition and engine had 160km's n the clock.

Pulled the engien apart and decided on a full blown engine rebuild.

Will be running on 17 x 9 Alpina's and going to have respray in Diamondswartz.

Im looking to order:

KK 290 cams

12.1 hi-comp pistons

2.3 bored out to 2.5L (95mm)

new timing chain, chain tensioner

Hi pressure oil pump kit.

Carbon fibre airbox + motec

iWill be adding:

Samco hoses all round.

ported head (hopefully to 48mm tb's)

At this stage i'll be looking for around 260-270hp at the fly wheel, maybe around 230hp at the wheels.

Hoping to have the car up and running around August in time to pick up for my B-day in September.. will definately be looking forward to doing a road trip down to Invercargille to pick up the car when it ready.

Let me know what you guys think,

Laurence.

ok guys,

i thought it was about time i updated the post as there may be a few changes that im making to the list of engine parts for the M3..

i was originally going for:

KK 290 cams

2.3L bottom end

2.3L head ported to 2.5L spec

12:1 pistons

After talking to a few people it appears there may be a better long-term solution for re-building my engine, only problem is there is a price difference (unless i can sell some of the 2.3L stuff, head etc)

I have now found that i can source brand new:

2.5L Grp A Head w/dialed in big arse valves

2.5L Grp A Pistons w/light weight pins

2.5L crank

308/292 schrick cams (these puppies are big with 12.2 & 12mm lift, 5.5 & 4.55mm lift at TDC respectively )

Grp A race valve springs

Cost wise the Grp A 2.5L parts are the same price as the first list + the maching and installing the engine. But i figure why pay similar price when i can get all new stuff that has been crack tested & forged. I also have to look at cost of shipping everything to NZ from Germany. So i might be looking a a couple of $1000 more (which is a big deal for me!).. but im sort of thinking that in the long run getting the new gear might work out a whole lot better for me?

Anyone have thoughts on this?

With the Grp A set-up i'd be making around 290-300+hp at the fly with good torque and a sh*t load of top end hp :)\

Laurence.

Group A head with bucket under shim will run you 5K Euro, just an FYI.

Hi Denny,

Thats pretty much right.. I can get the Grp A head a little cheeper but im aware of the cost of bucket under shims and i was planning on not using bucket under shims if i can help it, but it looks like im going down that road  .

its going to be a sh*t load of $$ either way, im just thinking that brand new gear eould be a better option then re-working my 2.3L head that had 180,000km's on it.

I just found out i can save over $700 on oil squirters if i get everything as a set.

If you can afford to do it ... do it .. maybe ask conrod on the forums here for technical details as he has one.

Nice set-up, is this smoething that you sourced and have for sale??

At this stage i've decided NOT to go with the 2.5L Grp A engine.purely because of the cost.even if i get the heaxd for 9k plus shipping I can't afford to get a 2.5L bottom end with con-rods and crank etc.

So im going to be sticking with the 2.3L bottom end, get the 2.3L top end taken to 2.5L spec (effectively a 2.4L running around 10.5:1 compression with 284/284 cams)

This will be good for around 270hp with the airbox & motec installed.

Bearing in mind if i had a 2.5L Grp A engine i'd need to upgrade almost all other parts in the car i'll start with sduspension & brakes next year. Itheres no point in runing 300+ hp car if i can't brake or steer properly. I have a few people interested in buying this engine '2.4L' next year so will probably sell it to finance the build of a full 2.5L top + bottom...

Not something i've got for sale, just something I researched.

uh dude, pretty sure mucking round with the head wont change the capacity from 2.3 to 2.4 L. doesnt make much sense

good m3 build seems to be keeping 2.3, changing engine management and sorting intake stuff along with headwork/cams. keeps it reasonably priced too i imagine.

plus taking the head to "2.5 spec" may lose low down torque. not sure about s14 that much though

alpha N is old, got to go with the motec for ease of tuning as more people in new zealand can deal with this software and its got a whole lot more features alpha N doesnt have. going 2.4 wont change torque much, but if you did worry about it you can always get a evo crank.

going for an evo spec (2.5L) build engine going to cost you another 10 grand and for what 20 hp? doesnt seem worth it to me.

Unless you going grupe A, thats another story.for reliability the hp gains from 2.3 to 2.5 dont seem to warrant the extra cash.

would love grupe A gear as thats another 40 hp say and worth the dosh?! but for a street driven car i wouldnt go there. spesh coz it would need a rebuild every 60,000k?!?

and when and where would you get the rpm up over 6000 to use that power your 40k engine cost you???

street, daily driven 2.5L build with 295hp is the way im going..

cant wait!

hey bro.. it's a little bit harder if i want to drop a 2.5L crank in. machine work + different sump etc would be needed.

I agree.. the higher rmp engine (top hp between 6-8000rmp) would make the engine less reliable.

I'm going to get this first stage done, see how it handles and then go from there.

can we stop talking about a 2.4...it makes no sense! would need to bottom end rebuild.

would love to see a street driven, reliable 2.5 at nearly 300hp.. not saying its outta the q but its pretty highly strung

hey Gus,

A friend of mine has a fully rebuild 2.5L engine with motec + 290kk cams & airbox. He's making 290hp and it's pretty damn streetable. It's got a pretty nice torque curve too :)

I think he was getting around 235hp atw at 6800rpm.. but more tuning and a higher red-line shoudl get anther 10-15hp.

It was rev-limited at 7k cos new engine and the tuner didn't want it blowing up :P

I'll see if i can source the graph, i have it stored somewhere on my comp.

Laurence.
