small or medium case diff??? (e30)

Recommended Posts

If it has 4 bolts on the output cover it's a small case, that's what it looks like, the med case have 6 bolts.

o, that makes life easier. So the internals can be switched?

no, but any size case will go into any e30. what are you trying to achieve?

I'm converting to manual (eventually), and have to change the diff because the current one will be to short with the manual gearbox ratio.

I've got a medium case one to put in.

so it should swap over?

yip, you might need to adjust the driveshaft length though. There is a large nut on the driveshaft about halfway along. You'll need to take exhaust and heatshields off to see it. Loosen that nut, fit the diff then tighten everything back up.

so when does it matter if youve got a small or medium case?

also, the side shaft seals dont fit... a metal cone sort of thing..the small case ones stick in further..a med case wouldnt fit with small diff seals, a med case with small case seals will leak oil

haha gus your confusing the poor guy.

Just swap the whole unit over. It will work fine. I have done the same thing with my car.

I'd only start to worry about a small case over 200hp

its a 4.45:1

But i wouldn't hold your breath for it.

and the freight would probably cost the same as one in auckland. ^_^

I've only just broken the small case in my race car - that took and absolute thrashing.
