Great NZ roads

Recommended Posts

Since we all like driving (I hope) and NZ has some amazingly beautiful roads to have a superb fang, how about a list of great roads by region? I'll start with what I know and then it can be updated.

Just a little about where and why its a great road :)

Northland

1) SH1 to Mangawhai and back

2) From Dargaville all the way to Tane Mahuta.

Auckland

1) SH1 - turn off at Ararimu before the bombays and head left (if southbound). Beautiful, very quiet road with nice twists and turns.

Waikato

1) From SH1, turn off before Rangiriri towards Glen Murray and drive towards Huntly on the other side of the river and continue towards Ngaruwahia

2) Hamilton to Raglan - About halfway, there's a superb bit of windy road that's bloody narrow. I usually park at the top and wait for the traffic to go before going downhill at full tilt :D and check for traffic before doing a U and charging up the ridge again :D

3)

*To be continued*

'nutha dunny road- the little road up to lanarch (sp) castle. tight hairpins up the hill and you can see if anything is coming. Heaps of other sweet roads round that peninsula too.

Also wainui coast road in welly, barely any traffic.

I'd have to say Paekakariki Hill Rd... Wicked as winding road over Paekakariki Hill that comes out just North of Porirua/WGTN. Sub 10min runs are fun :D.

Johnsonville - Makara (Ohariu Valley Rd). But if you go over to Makara at 2am in the morning there may be cows in the middle of the road as i found out one night.

Laurence.

paekak is cool, but i am always aware that there may be fast cars or motorbikes coming the other way,and the road is very narrow in places...i just leave the 5 in third all the way :)

State Highway 38 is fun. Not in a BMW though.

I'm in for the Karangahake Gorge too. Actually the drive from Paeroa to Whakatane is a favourite of mine. Then onto Gisborne via the Waioeka Gorge or around East Cape.

State Highway 30 from Kawerau to Rotorua.

Ditto for Parakai to Wellsford.

From Christchurch to Wanaka via Thompsons Track.

The Crown Range from Wanaka to Queenstown.

If you could close the road, the road from Thames to Whitianga via Coromandel would be awesome. Bloody trucks and Nana's slow you down.

Then you have the bloody Aucklanders who try to pass them on blind corners!

Sorry, just a rant from a local!

Yeah. Snap. Also, Ponga Rd then home through the Hunua Gorge.

Twilight road, clevedon.

I got a vivid glimpse of my mortality on that road once (not to mention a humbling reminder of the limited extent of my own abilities) and havn't been back since. Rode past it once or twice on the bike but never had the balls...

thames to coromandel town (west side of coro peninsula)

from coromandel town to whitianga - no traffic and after the big hill the road flows really well.

The back road to taupo is mapped on http://ocbc.co.nz.

1. click on RidesWeDid on the right hand menu

2. read the Route Map instructions

3. click on the link below back road to taupo, and your waypoints are in there.

pm me if you're stuck
