Columns are close together=very thin floor supporting the cars compared to conventional carpark. That plus cost of land in big cities presumably makes it economic. OLLIE 26 Report post Posted July 2, 2007 i can;t figure out how they get the cars on and off the platforms ... do they leave the hand brakes off? and those platforms are tilted forward so that they simple push and pull the cars on and off? is there a driver who is not afraid of heights working there? big magnets? conveyors on each platform? gahhh i want to know! You go there to pick up your new car, they retrieve it and you get you photo taken with your new car and you drive it away. Apparently totally automated, but nothing on how. Soon to be owners of a brand new Volkswagen take an escalator from the main entrance, or Piazza, up into the Abholerwelt (check-in area for Volkswagen customers). At 23 service stations, customer-service agents answer questions, explain vehicle delivery and recommend what to see in the Autostadt, based on customer-interests. The next steps in the procedure are automatic: a lift in one of the CarTowers selects the correct vehicle and conveys it to the centre of the tower from where it is gently lowered to the ground floor. Thereafter the new car rolls through a tunnel into the Car Distribution Centre. This elliptic building has a transparent, floating roof, under which two restaurants, a simulator and a shop are grouped around a lively square. This is where, a large display panel indicates the collecting customer‘s name, the hand-over begins.
