All of a sudden my fuel gauge stopped working?

Recommended Posts

Hey all.

This would be my first problem since owning a BMW (approx 1 month now)

All of a sudden my E36 fuel gauge has just stopped working?

It was working fine and reading half tank when I came home. Parked up. Went out a few hours later and I noticed that it's stuck past empty with the fuel light on. I thought maybe there actually was no petrol in it so I filled it up and it didn't move.

Thanks in advance,

OSiRiS :(

Annoying promblem I know. I had same thing but my fuel light still worked. Brought a new fuel gauge but now it reads full at way past the full mark and empty reads about 2mm to the left of half way and the petrol light still works at this empty point. I gave up trying to fix it as I hated pulling the gauges out, so now I just fill up every 300miles. Gauge problems suck arse.

Hi ,

This is easy one , all you got to do is replace the fuel float in the fuel tank

You can ring me on 0800 BMW 992 OR 579 3331

E30 had same problem.Fuel level sender in the fuel tank which is under the seat.Guess it's probably the same on an E36.

Stuck a new one in (after trying three that didnt fit) and it was sweet.

Worth a try

Yep if its an import it more than likely will be the 'nissan one' and if its nz new it will be 'zf'.

A common prob - which is what happened to mine ('96 323i Coupe import) is flaring between 2nd/3rd, and if you haven't got a warrenty can be very expensive. Mine was fully re-coned and the bill was around the $3k mark!!

Had the exact problem as described. I just CRCed the connectors to the level sender and it started working again :-)

Worth giving a try before replacing anything.

Another thing that seems to get it to work and I dunno why is this.

1) disconnect the connectors to the level sender and pump (they are together on the right hand side sender under the back seat)

2) Start the car it will sputter and die after a few second since you have disconnected the pump.

3) Switch off the engine before it dies.

4) Reconnect the sender and pump.

5) It worked for me :-)

Good luck!

None of that will work on an E36

Its a broken wire on the sender unit in the tank

I can rewire it for you

Just give me a call

Cheers
