You really need to learn to use the search option haha.

Depends how much you want to pay, and what sort of service you want.

Driving Sounds can suss you out, but charge you a leg for it.

Parallel Imported can suss you out, but ppl have more issues with them.

Or, head to Paul Mooney, get a deal, and install yourself!

5.25" component fronts. The OE speaker mounts is absolute garbage so don't spend too much up here unless you want to DIY front speaker pods in the doors, but then go 6.5"components instead. Don't go super budget, but have a good listen especially to the tweeters cos those are what you'll hear the mosts. Choice of the woofer isn't so important due to the rubbish mount.

Don't touch the rears.

The sub and amp for boot, size and power depends on your quality / boom boom bias and your wallet.

The only good 5.25"s I've seen are Alpines, which are quite pricey!

Best to get some 6.5"s and make some door pods.

If you don't want to pay an arm & a leg then maybe JBL, Infinity?

I'd recomend to stay away from Sony if you can (if you want good quality)

If you want excelent quality?? DLS speakers all the way!!

They will cost you a bit, no.. a lot more than you're average set of speakers but will pretty much out perform anything else on the market (SQ + SPL). A good set would set you back around $600 - $700+ I'd recomend running an amp of around 150rms. (It would be a waste of time to run a nice set of front components off your head unit)

I was running some DLS competition 3way speakers. Pushing 140dB with sub's set-up and only had them maxed up to 3/4 volume EVER, absolutely NO distortion.. Can't wait to install then into the e30 M3 soon. they also have a really small magnet design so allow for shallow mounting.

I beg to differ about sony components, I have a set that I bought about 3 or 4 years ago, they have outlasted my entire sound system twice (Ive changed everything else twice but still run the same components)

I would probably reccomend however 'infinty kappa perfect' they come in the size needed, are light as hell and have a very shallow magnet. Not to mention a fairly decent RMS rating. Only cost around 250 which is pretty good for what they are.

P.S: Dont get coaxial or 2/3/4 way speakers. They f**k up your sound stage and IMO sound like crap.

I happen to be selling some DLS iridium 3 way components, wanting $800. Not sure how you'd install them tho. They'd need a great amp to run them so probably well out of budget.

On budget, Infinity Kappa fronts and then a sub/amp in the boot.

If you can get over the North Shore, there's Image Dynamics subs on sale at Car Stereo Specialists (note I'm the importer so I'm probably a bit biased). You can't really buy any better bang for buck than the iD range (iD12 is $279) and the idmax subs are very well priced (starting at $589) but you want around 1000rms to get the most out of them. A few of us car stereo geeks had a good play with them on the weekend and more than happy with the results.

Chris, the thing with Sony isn't that are are no good - they are fine, its just that there is so much better out there for the same money.

Sorry, I should have put the comment into context.

If you'r budge was around $600 - $800 for the whole system then Sony speakers would serve the purpose. If you wanted a system $1000 - $1500 then Infinity, JBL, Alipina would be ok.

$2000 + system then DLS speakers, Apms, proper speaker wire etc. etc.

eg. wire alone on my system was running excess of $300, 2 subs running 1000wrms each etc.. 3 amps, cap, blah blah. but it's all relative to what you want to do, what end goal you have in mind.

If you want nice sound, minimal distortion then 2-way, 3-way components, decent head unit, maybe 1 amp to bridge your speakers etc.

Blast you ears off system... another story all together :D

I think the biggest questions is what's your budget

and second what do you want out of it

pure sound quality ---------------vs-------------- sq not so important

good volume bass ----------------vs-------------- ear bleeding bass

what is the standard size of front speakers?

my ride is coming along nicely!

5 1/4 inch. I have Infinity Reference seris 6 1/2" in the stock location but need 2mm spacers (use corrugated cardboard or similar if you cant be arsed making something up - works fine as a thin spacer - works similar to a gasket) and need to cut the kick panels and modify the bonnet release lever. About an extra half hour to an hours work than putting standard size speakers in.

I don't thing I can ever remember hearing a good sound 9 x 6. These are only good for shear volume.

Go for front two way speakers. 5 1/4 will fit straight in. I'd suggest speakers with detachable tweeters. Mount the tweeters on the dash up against the windscreen.

Go have a listen to as many speakers as you can , don't buy unless you've happy with the sound.

If you going to a car stereo company take a selection of your fav music. Get the store to select a head unit that has all its sound enhancements turned off and is running flat bass and treble. . Get the store to turn off any subs in the system and have a listen to the speakers only with your music. That way you'll here what the speaker actually sound like

Select speakers in your price range.

Listen carefully to the tracks you’ve selected. Ask yourself, does the treble sound ok, is it too harsh, is it too smooth, are the vocals clear, does the speaker convey the music well for its price.

In terms of speakers bands I'd recommend having a listen to entry price models from the following brands. (These are some brands that I've listened to)

Boston Acoustics

Phoenix Gold.

Sony XSH series (XSH series are embarrassingly good for the price)

Rockford Fosgate

JL audio

Focal

In terms of bass in a BMW, because of the factory speaker size you'll need to add a sub to fill in the bottom end base.

For an entry level system I'd spend more on the fronts than the Bass as your ears are less sensitive to lower frequency distortion. You can get reasonable sounding bass from a 10 inch sub mounted in a sealed enclosure. (Don't run too smaller enclosure otherwise it will sound boomy)

hey thanks man that was helped me alot. i will go to a store this wknd. but the thing is with the rears would it be all good to have like 6.5 at the back aswell as i realy dont like 6x9s i have a sub for the bass which is 1400wats runing with 1400wat amp
