E36 Lean :S

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm wondering if anyone can help me or shed some light on this thats doing my head in

I have a 1996 BMW 318is 4 Door

I've noticed for a while that the car leans on one side more than the other ...... R/H side about 1cm - 1.5cm higher than the L/H side.....

Has anyone experienced this before?? and if so how did you go about it?

It's been bugging me lol

Cheers guys

I think this is common. Same with my E30.

What suspension setup do you have?

its normal bro. Balances out when the drivers inside.

I was told Honda mount their engines backwards to offset the same thing? Someone confirm/flame me?

Yep that's correct, honda put their engine and trans the other way to balance the car out, i.e trans is lighter than engine so put it on the drivers side so when the driver is in position naturally the car balances out. Still unsure why they decided to run the engine anti-clockwise though????

Same Weight offset thing id say. All that torque going away from the driver. An average MALE driver is around 90kg id assume, and anything to keep weight side to side the same the better

Isn't 90kg a bit high? but regardless, yea, it'd be to offset weight of driver I reckon.

i put 80kg 1st then i thought of all the biggies i drive past on the motorway in their 5 series bmw's.

Maybe honda average drivers are 60kg, but i reckon an average bmw driver would weigh more :)

:o NO i am NOT calling you fat! Gosh

Ah thats sounds about right with hondas ... heard thru mates about that too.

All gud then, at least im not the only one i take it?

I'll double check that theory and get a mate to hope in the drivers seat :P

Cheers bro

My E46 has a very slight lean as well. Biased by around 8mm towards the right rear (low) - I put this down to the battery in the right rear. Can't think of anything else it could be in a car that hasn't done a lot of work or had a major accident.

Ok well the car is higher on the passenger side by roughly 1cm or so, so i dont think that theory of the driver evening it out .....

will try have a word with the suspension gurus or something..

Mine slightly does it. Kinda. Not.

"It's called a gangsta lean".

I once had a car with a lean. The problem wasn't mechanical or factory orientated. It was caused by a fat-ass previous owner. Check for shock wear as well. There is bit of damage a 150kg + momma can do to a car.

Edit: grammar

Maybe you've got american/german springs so the raised driver side is the passenger side here?
