E28 Brakes upgrade

Hi Guys

Im wanting to put some more stopping power on my e28 i currently have 15" rims on there,

and was wundering if anyone knows what i biggest size rotors i can put onto the car would be or am i going to have to upgrade my rims to something bigger to get some real stopping power

Hi Kym,

What is the actual prob. with your brakes at the moment?

It could be a simple as new/better Pads, disc & hoses and a caliper overhaul to get the fix you need.

Or an actual upgrade to the likes of E34/32 discs & calipers (to fit under 15's), as the E28 shares almost identical front & rear suspension as the E34/32's and Cain's 540is having the "shortest" 100-0kph from what ever test it was (I forget).

To the more extreme requiring bigger wheels, with e39 540i rotors and a calipers to suit (from a E31 840i iirc??).

Brake Upgrades - E28

The brakes listed below bolt on without any modification. This requires

calipers, carriers, guide bolts, rotors and pads. You need the carrier for

each brake system, usually included if you buy used.

Front brake assemblies that will fit any E28:

(some numbers may be slightly wrong, I misplaced my table)

E28 535 282mm x 25mm vented or E28 M5 300mm x 30mm

E34 535 302mm x 22mm vented

E34 540 302mm x 28mm vented

E34 M5 315mm x 28mm vented

E34 M5 345mm x 32mm vented from 6/94

E32 735 302mm x 28mm vented

E32 750 302mm x 28mm vented

E31 840 324mm x 30mm

Rear brake assemblies that fit any E28:

E28 535 284mm x 10mm solid

E34 535 300mm x 10mm solid

E34 540 300mm x 20mm vented

E34 M5 300mm x 20mm vented

E34 M5 328mm x 20mm vented from 6/94

Unfortunately these don't work, but are here as a size reference

E32 735 300mm x 12mm solid

E32 750 300mm x 20mm vented

The E34 Rear Brake Part Numbers to use:

E34 540i / E32 740i Calipers:

34 21 1 160 399 ( part number - left )

34 21 1 160 400 ( part number - right )

E34 540i / E32 740i Carriers:

34 21 1 160 384 ( part number x 2 )

E34 540i / M5 300mm x 20mm rotors

34 21 1 159 659 ( part number x 2 )

E32 calipers need the E32 master cylinder to work properly.

If you install SS lines without bigger-volume piston'ed front calipers (IMO)

the pedal ends up unacceptably 'sharp'. However, ABS equipped cars

can loose some of the spongy pedal feel by using SS lines.

The E32 brakes will fit under 15" wheels. These are your best choice for

economy... and will be capable of handling just about anything you would

do with your 535i. E32 750iL front rotors are vented from the inside

rather than outside around the "hat".

The 540i/6 fronts may be considerably cheaper the E34 M5 and are the same

size. The stock E28 ///M car brake bias is calculated at 73% front and 27%

rear. The upgrade to E34, M5 rear brake will change the bias to 66% front

and 34% rear.

the E28 M5 used the same rear rotors as the 535i. Which should tell you how

important rear brakes are in the big scheme of things.

An increase in pedal firmness can be gained by installing the master cylinder

from the E-32, 750 that has a 25mm cylinder bore.

I've gone 750i fronts and 540i rears.

Are those Bias ratios based on piston area or rotor dia. only?

E36 M3 rears also bolt on I believe 312x20mm with directional veins.

Fronts won't for sure.

The rear discs definitely do as I am running them, and work with the Parking brake.

Not 100% on the calipers, I do know they bolt on, as I know someone running them, he had to machine the outside (of the caliper bridge) so he could run 15's (drag wheels) but not sure if he machined the disc down also to fit them??

But funnily enough I can fit E39 15's over mine with the brembo calipers.

Did the 750i upgrade require any mods? I've read that it is a straight bolt on upgrade but then I also read somewhere that the carriers are different. I'm hoping to pick up a full set (rotors, calipers, carriers, pads) tomorrow. Cheers.

Needs to be edited, E32 735i fronts are only 22mm thick. Just a heads up, cheers for the info though!

not the ones i have seen e32 735i and 750i 740i all 28mm thick in the front .

and vented in the rear just like the 540i etc

Hmmm ok, well these were off your mate in Drury (cant remember his name) and I pulled them off the car. I didn't bother measuring them till I got home and the fronts are defiantly 22mm thick and the rears were solid. So now I'm on the hunt for some 28mm thick fronts and 540i rears if anyone has any. Also I just got two master cylinders off a wreaker who 'thinks' they are off a E32, is there an easy way to tell if they are the 25mm bore ones without pulling them apart (they are slightly different in the casting, one has the bmw logo and the other does not, on has 22 stamped on it and the other 23). They are the two bolt ones so at least they are right in that regard.

Hay Guys

I went with the Opposite to Silver fox 540i fronts , 750i rears - and wholly the first time i tested the brakes (seen i have no abs) with the 540i on the front the car nearly fish tailed but stopped alot quicker than my stock one

defo the best brake upgrade to fit under 15's ive had - besides going aftermarket

Brake Upgrades - E28

I've gone 750i fronts and 540i rears.

Did you have any issues with the little hex locating bolt for holding the disc in place on the hub?

I went to fit my 750 front rotors today and found that the little bolts I have sit slightly higher than the face of the disc. I ended up fitting the discs minus the bolts but I'd like them there.

BMW list a change mid way through 1990.

Any ideas? BMW dealer here only has one in stock but I'm not really sure what the difference is and Realoem list just one bolt for just about every BMW. I suspect these are the ones both I and the dealer have.

I'd love some help with this.

I have just brought all four disks and pads to match my 540 calipers and I'll be fitting them this weekend so I'll let you know if they have the same issues with the locating screw hole. I thought the only difference in the brakes between the 750 and 540 is the caliper? Oh and I have two 750 brake master cylinders so if you want one let me know!

Ok so it ended up two weeks later than I thought, but I've done the conversion. No issues with the locating nut. It was the easiest upgrade I have done, ever! Every thing came off easy (nothing seized or striped) and all the new kit slid straight on. I have yet to fit the master cylinder so theres quite a bit of travel in the peddle but it already feels so much better. Should fly through its WOF next week...

Glad to hear.

I got the hex screws sorted.

I only have the 750i fronts on so far and stock master cylinder but already the brakes are so much better. Even my partner noticed!

The only issue I have now is that I currently have too much front bias and the front locks up to easily, although some new tyres would probably help too.

But already I can tell that when the rears are on the thing will stop on a Dim!

Thats about right, i still havnt put my rears on dont have the cash for the Rotors yet, trying to get it to wof standard first and really have no issues stopping now besides

trying not to lock my brakes as i dont have ABS anymore. removed due to Failure haha bit more fun tho
