i have a 1992 750iL

the automatic isnt playing up at all

but i think its high enough km's to get a full service

does anyone a good place in tauranga or hamilton where i can get it serviced

and how much will i be looking at paying

I recommend Cambridge Transmissions (in Cambridge of course) Great to deal with & from experience much better than others. Don't know about Tauranga though

Hillcrest Auto Services in Hamilton which is pretty close to you im guessing .

Owner is an Ex BMW mechanic and still serves alot of his old customers. Knows his BM's very well.

Not sure about a 750iL but i paid over 2k on my trans overhaul on the 328i. That was through a friend too

My mate got one done there recently on his E36 318i was around $80-100 i think but he supplied the filter.

The proper oil costs more than $100 and a 318 I is a completely different gearbox. Compare apples with apples

Yeah if your using BMW ATF will cost a bit more but otherwise imo not that much different. Would think the E36 should cost more in theory having to pump the fluid into the sump.

Guess alot of the cost comes down to what the hourly labour charge is.

This is probably a stupid question and I'd probably get any gearbox serviced regardless but:

Seeing as BMW recommends that the oil is lifetime oil as in never needs replaced does that mean that you don't/shouldn't service the tranny and differentials unless they display problematic symptoms?

Longlife gets done every 100,000km

Dextron III full synthetic every 40,000KM

Diffs every 40,000km with full synthetic oil

Oil (8L) $176.00 Full synthetic Dextron III

All plus GST

Labour would depend on the repairer. Done correctly the EGS should also be cleared of any fault codes if they are present. It may not take the full 8 litres of oil as it is not a trans rebuild job.

I would estimate 1-1.5 hrs labour to do the job properly with a road test as well.

i was told it could be quite expensive as they have to do manual adjustments in the gearbox to account for wear in the parts and that takes alot of time. is this true

also the reason i want to get it serviced is because if you very slowly increase throttle when stopped just as the torque converter starts to transfer power it shudders slightly under intial acceleration kind of the feeling you get when you have a misfire but as you put a little more power down it comes right

yea im pretty sure im catching it early as its usually not noticable

but after being warned how much a failure on these cars can cost ive been on the lookout for anything that could be a hint of anything wrong

i will prob get it serviced in the next couple of weeks as im changing jobs so holiday pay coming my way
