hi there was wondering if anyone knows what the common faults are for the airbag light staying on,it just popped up one day ,now i cant get a warrant because of it,also it seems to be using water , around about a litre every 50kms i had to replace water res tank as it had a crack in it,but still seems to use water, anyone that can help on these matters would be greatly appreciated

Dont drive it anymore....get it towed to a BMW specialist to diagnose. SRS system needs to be scanned....its not DIY

Thats an interesting response Glenn, when my airbag sensor went (and so the light came on) I was told by both the dealer and Page European down here that it was perfectly safe to drive whilst we waited for a replacement from Germany.

The idea being that if any part of the SRS system fails the whole system gets shut down and the only difference would be that the airbags wouldnt trigger if you had an accident.

Its very common for the SRS light to be triggered by a faulty passenger seat sensor thats a relatively very easy DIY fix. There is plenty of information out there about it for you to read sabbath but of course having it hooked up to the computer should give you the answer straight away.

I had a problem few months ago with a faulty air bag switch in the steering wheel, so the obc had logged an error a few times - it would still pass the check when I started the car, but the light would turn on again to notify that there was a logged error. Had to replace wiring loom in the steering wheel, cost me about $400.

But as Glenn said, get it scanned.

Think in this case Glenn was referring to towing rather than driving due to water consumpion rather than SRS fault.

Totally correct though on having it scanned to confirm fault. Yes the seat sensor is common to fail but plenty of other reasons too - a guess without confirming first.

Yes...I was referring to his water problem ...not the airbag fault

There are four components in the passengers seat for SRS

Occupancy sensor

Control unit

Seat belt receiver (actuator)

Seat belt receiver wiring loom (very problematic)

And you will need a scanner to do an SRS reset

Some of the DIY repairs are illegal ie: resistors to fool the system

My advice....get it done properly by someone who knows what he is doing

Just bringing this back up; I removed the bottom half of my rear seat because I wanted to carry some heavy items on a long distance trip. I noticed straight away that the airbag light came on when I started the car. I thought it had something to do with removing the rear seat, which was quite obvious.

However, when I got back to Auckland I put the rear seat back in the car, started the car and the airbag light is still on <_<

Hey Guys ,

The light came on in my e46 got it scanned and it said it was the sensor mat in the passengers side.. Is it dangerous to drive with this light on ? could it possibly be able to damage other elctronics?

I was quoted around $550 to get this fixed. Is this a fair price ? Or should i just save up for some leather or suede seats ? thanks for the advice

Andrew

Not dangerous from an electronics point of view, but dangerous because of no passenger air bag operation when in the need of.

Also needs fixing for a WOF. Sounds about right for a price to fix.

DONT look to cheat on a fix -they are there for a reason.

If replacing the seats - it obviously still requires a working sensor circuit in the passenger seat for the system to operate
