blower resistor pack?

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

I'm looking for a few opinions on this.

The ventilation in my car (E36, 328) is blowing almost nothing at any of the fan speeds.

At 1 and 2 there is nothing (just a little bit of fan noise), at 3 there is noise and very little air and at 4 is the same thing, just louder.

The fan seems to work but I can't really tell if it's too weak to push the air or there is a loss somewhere in the system.

I'm ready to change the resistor pack hoping this will fix the issue. There are some step by step instructions on the net but I'm not sure which side to start on since I don't know if the example is LHD or RHD. Could anyone help?

Any of you encountered something like that? Can this also be an issue with a blocked ventilation outlet, valve, etc, etc,

Any ideas or recommendations??

It's getting a bit annoying having to wait an eternity till the windows defog or not being able to cool off on a hot day.

I'm open for questions if more info is needed.

Thanks

R

could be that your pollen filter/micro filter is blocked, normally fitted from drivers side foot well, will influence both heater temp and aircon temp +air flow

Thought that might be one cause but I was unable to find more on it.

Any links to more info on that (DIY steps etc.) ??

Thanks heaps :)

If all the fan speeds are working replace the pollen filter. If you dont have all the fan speeds it will also have a resistor fault...if it is the resistor, I would still fit a new pollen filter as well

In position 4 the fan is connected directly to 12 volt suuply (resistor pack is bypassed) if you still get NO air movement -- then the air volume problem is not being caused by the resistor pack -

Try filter as suggested by others -- also check that the vent controls are working (the ones that direct air to feet / dash vents) you should hear the motors driving when you change distribution selection

I can hear noises from inside when changing positions and I can feel a little bit of air at the feet if I close all the dash vents :)

I'll replace the filter and let you know how it went.

You guys rule !!!

Thanks

I have the same prob also, lots of noise but limited air movement.

You guys are the best :D

Took the filter out and tested: much better :)

Here is a RHD microfilter replacement DIY :

Also took some pics when I did it. Very easy indeed for RHD.

1. take panel out 3 screws and slide out

2.take the vent tube out (might not be necessary but makes things easier if you're not a small person)

3.look for this towards the back

4. slide the mother out and marvel at the dirt coming out with it. BRING VACUUM

Good luck. If I was able to do it, anybody can in 10 min or less :)

Well done mate. Might do this to mine just to get better ventilation.

Do you mind me asking how much the filter was?

REPCO wants a bit over 70 and the $tealer is over 90.

Called a few other places in Wellie and all is around the REPCO price.

There might be cheaper options but I couldn't find them :(

If anyone knows a good cheap place for BMW parts in Wellington please share

Peace

I think it was the original one ... HA !!!

Yup ... they're white, at the beginning

I would recommend it. Easy to do but the filters are bloody expensive.

I paid less for an engine air filter which is twice the size.

Oh well ... needed doing. Good luck with that.

Cheers

R.
