jjs 64 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 Has anyone driven on the new toll road with a German plate? See this link about number plate detection. I wonder if they can work out your plate is in a different font and issue you a ticket, or if the system cannot detect German plates at all.
Guest Simon* Report post Posted January 28, 2009 I was wondering about this too

bravo 35 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 Which is why I plan to use the old route, although I have toyed with the idea of covering my euro plate and attaching the standard one so I can do a tunnel run.

simke 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 The question is, is the image clear enough to tell if the plate is german plate or NZ euro plate. But if they are using the latest and greates in technology then I suppose the image will be clear enough.
Guest Simon* Report post Posted January 28, 2009 Considering how much the twin camera gantries cost, I'd bloody hope so!

Its not like we havent had any warning I mentioned about three years ago that cameras were on their way to 'read' number plates and here it is finally in the public eye.Anyone with a german plate driving through there should expect a letter. *Glenn* 854 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 I'd be a bit carefull. The police will probably be monitoring the site with patrol cars to catch those hiding or interferring with their plates to avoid the toll

Why bother going to the hassle of trying to modify your car / hide your plate? I agree that people with German Plates are likely to get stung or some sort of letter from LTNZ. Anyone with a german plate driving through there should expect a letter. I drove thru on Sunday when I was going to Orewa (and I have a german plate). Thought I'd try the new road, and got stuck there for over an hour. Not sure if the system was operating at that time, since the road was free to use. I guess I'll have to wait to find out if I get anything in my mail box Edited January 28, 2009 by Simke

JiB 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 I wonder if the plate system would pick up stolen cars, etc? I guess it wouldn't be able to compare the plate/rego details to the vehicle it's on?
