Five Star 0 Report post Posted February 9, 2009 Coming from a current uni student with experience in all the courses you're thinking of doing.. Cut this BS about working your ass off. You may want a part time job, but don't work too many hours. You're going to go out and go drinking, you're moving out of home. You're going to socialise and have a good time etc.. you need to think about your course. Your course to get into uni is harder than first year uni. There's no way in hell I could ever hold up a part time job more than 5 or 10 hours a week with my course. I choose not to have one so I can get in debt now, get decent marks and make it all back a lot quicker later. My course will be similar to yours in that there's assignments and class you can't miss, or you fail automatically. Extra years spent studying cost a lot. Teaching does have many hours in work, and not everyone can do it. Most people I know have dropped out of teaching because they'll kick you out if you're not smart or dedicated enough. First year should be fine for having a part time job, but a lot of teaching students I know wouldn't think of having a job in the few year(s). Those that finish it love it, and most can't imagine doing anything else. Yes you can live off $150 a week, but if you're going to have a life you'll need an overdraft or another source of money (that isn't a credit card). The $150 a week is there for people whos parents support them, the student allowance is for students whos parents don't earn enough to support them. Oh, and work your ass off when you're not studying. You'll need the cash. Although this makes you a whole lot lazier when it comes to uni work.. Right now I'm working for the uni. I just can't win... kingkarl 136 Report post Posted February 10, 2009 I'll scab off my parents (even if they pay for my petrol). Keep in mind I'm a 17 year old girl. I'm thick and a bit clumsy. I aim to marry a rich guy with lots of money. Not my fault my mother brought me up as a gold gigger. I'll pull through it. My brother and sister in law lives up the road. I'll rob them of their food, internet and spa pool use. No one likes a leech. Seriously, you'll feel so much better about yourself if your not a dependent and can sustain yourself. And at the times, yes I drove a Toyota corona, and drank Double Brown (Which I still do today). Holy sh*t! Long lost twin?? I get crap for driving my rona and drinking the Do Bros almost everyday. laadeelaa 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2009 Thanks Five Star. I could read it without getting bored! It does make sense though. No point getting an over draft this year. By the time my birthday comes around there will be no point. I'll live it up when I'm young. Before I get married, have kids, and have to wait half of my life waiting to be able to spend money on myself again. On the brightside! Atleast I'll be doing Teaching, which at this rate seems the wisest career for me, since I've always wanted to do it, plus they get paid soo much in other countries. Atleast I'm not doing a hairdressing course, like every other fricken girl my age these days. Waste of money. Course costs are too much, considering the amount of money they get back through there jobs. I'd never have a problem over spending money when I go into town, anyone who is stupid enough to spend hundreds on drink to get them pissed, when they could just get pissed at home, then taxi into town, and still have money to spare. I'm a cheap drunk anyways.

I hate it when people judge people on these forums. FFS. It's a forum. Alright. I've been supporting myself for the last two years, paying for my petrol, hardly was at home cos I'd be at school then working 20-30hr weeks at my old part-time job. I hardly ever ate at home. I bought my own clothes. So I'm sorry if you have been mistaken or mislead, but I think I deserve to be supported by my parents for just 12 weeks. Thanks. pjay 8 Report post Posted February 10, 2009 Holy sh*t! Long lost twin?? I get crap for driving my rona and drinking the Do Bros almost everyday. Haha possibly man. Had the Rona when in was 15/16. Cant beat the 20 for 20 doubles. I discovered Big Horn end of last year too. $8 for 12, but its not that great after a few. Had a few doubles just before actually. Its so bloody humid. I reckon if ma and pa will support you while you study, good on them. Its like one of the final steps before entering a real self supportive independent life - Study. And good on any parent that will support their kids through study. I know my ma would've supported me money wise if she could've.

I think this is just very subjective bro, there's nothing wrong with working relatively long hours at uni. It's still possible to work 16 hours a week, get anywhere between an A- to A+ average and still go out and drink on saturday night. It's not impossible - and I'm more than satisfied with the rewards. But it all depends on what's on your priority list - an E65 is pretty high on mine, so I see this sh*t as being worth it.
JiB 2 Report post Posted February 10, 2009 I averaged A- last year on top of working 10-15hrs a week. And I'm sure someone with greater motivation and organisation - ie not me could do better. Hugely gratifying, so I say go hard at what ever you do Good luck with your course.
togate 0 Report post Posted February 10, 2009 (edited) I usually go out Thursday, Friday and Saturday, work 20 hours a week and still average a A- average. Work hard, study hard, party hard. Edited February 10, 2009 by Togate
Cale 36 Report post Posted February 10, 2009 Correct. It's purely asking for advice. It's not like I'm going to listen to half of it. Dude, everyone makes an effort to put in far more than their 2c worth and your not going to listen to half of it?!?! Seems a little ungrateful to me, as you started the thread and all the advice is all worth taking in. Anyway, I will say thanks guys as I am first year Uni this year and this is all very informative

Reading it. And taking in half of it. Better than none. Not like you ever listen to everything strangers tell you. YEAH. Thanks gorgeous people, mostly men. Five Star 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 Like I said, it depends on the course. But I've got more compulsory hours in labs than most commerce students I know have contact hours. In first year you could hold up a part time job easy... if you don't go out 4 or 5 nights a week.

M325is 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2009 Thanks, but no thanks. I think a 3 week holiday in Oz to escape from the bullshit and sort out my life has confirmed what I wanna do. If I stayed at school, I think I'd go crazy. You don't know the half of it. Not that it's any of your business. I so know where your coming from, you get to a point (mine was first quarter of 6th form) where you just cant do it anymore, everyone are immature turds and your teachers don't see individual potential. Maybe some just grow up a bit faster? The decision was to stay at school and do detention twice a week for wearing incorrect shoes and sunglasses (I walked 10km to and from school daily and got blisters no matter what school shoes I wore and I suffer from migraines) or leave and get treated like an adult and follow my preferred career path. I got accepted at AUT at 16years old off my 5th form results, mostly 80%+ although my English was a bastard 58% due to stupid essays, my course selectors thankfully looked past that after interviewing me. By 21years old I owned my own company and got there all by myself apart from my parents paid for my course. I still own/run Attract Signs and I will never look back. Screw school, if you have goals and you have worked hard up to a point, go for it.
