Haven't you answered your own question?

I believe the VIN decoder gives information too:

G3= is auto trans oil..which is the correct oil for early BMW manual gearboxes....use full synthetic

Too add - I use redline high performance ATF, it is g3 fully synthetic, available from BNT. It doesn't have to be the high performance version but I thought my old gearbox deserved the best :D

I've been using Redline MTF full synthetic in the g/box and diff

Has done quite well ripping up and down the country and around Manfeild and Taupo tracks ;)

I'm just going off what the Haynes manual states which is SAE 80, to API GL4 I've already bought

2 liters of castrol VMX 80 manual gearbox fluid (non synthetic)

so ill let you know how I get on... should be ok I think

Glenn,

care to elaborate why to use the G3? Bentley also specifies API GL4 Manual Trans fluid. I'm about to replace the fluid in mine and will put in the G3, but want to know why.

You can use VMX 75w80 but the correct oil is G3... some of the race series guys are using 75w80.. however if I was ... I would be using Synthese 75w80
