What should I look out for when checking one?

I reckon a 5 series would be a cool DD, a 3 series can be a bit small if you take passengers.

Do you plan to buying privately or from a car yard? Budget?

If you are buying privately or from a non-BMW dealer, you might want the car to go thru a BMW dealer pre-purchase inspection. General consense here is that AA check don't tell you much compare to a BMW dealer one. They cost about the same.

Go see/research as many as you can, you'll realise there are many different combinations in the car (equipment like radio, steering wheel style, wheel style, trim colour, etc....). Find one that you like if you can, you'll enjoy your car more.

If the car have unknown service history, do a coolant change asap. Use the genuine BMW stuff only (they are very reasonbly priced) This is often overlook by many people (especially not serviced by BMW dealers) but will give you grief down the road if you ignore this.

I am sure many others here can tell you more on more technical stuff.

5 series are the middle sized BMW..a bit smaller than a falcon or commodore.A five series will normally have more oprions than a 3 series,but that also means more can go wrong.BMWs will prolly use a bit more fuel than the equivalent sized car as they are generally heavier,the actual mileage varies more due to driver behaviuor BMW have logical badging .A 525 is a middle sized bmw with a 2.5 liter engine.A 328 is a small bmw witha 2.8 liter engine

a 750 is a larger bmw with a 5 liter engine
