Medium case lsd centre

Recommended Posts

My guy in the States has medium case clutch pack LSD centes that he can send me for $530 this is a very good price considering our dollar is so crap at the moment. This is the bare lsd centre without ring and pinion. You can have this fitted to your diff for around 150-200 by Tony at Steelie gears.

These lsd's will fit e28 e30 e34 e36 medium case diffs.

Hi Darren, are these brand new centres? Can you elaborate on what is involved in converting an existing med case open diff to LSD with one of these? Ie are any other parts required?

Have done this myself with one I bought of SilverFox.

All you need to do is take the diff apart..

Remove the output flanges.

Unbolt the bolts behind these flanges on the sides. Then they slide out and the open diff center and ring gear come free.

Remove the speed pickup ring from the diff center (pry it off with a screwdriver).

Unbolt the ring gear (You will need a very strong Impact wrench). Bolt it to the LSD center and then the tricky part is getting the speed ring back on... If you can, Heat it in the oven or with a propane torch lightly so it fits on easier - Or else do what I did and try to tap it back on with a hammer slowly. You need patience here lol.

Then place the ring gear that is now on the LSD center back into the diff, Install the bearing holder things that slide into the side and hold it in. Bolt them up.

Then slide the flanges back in and your done..

When I had mine done the bearings werent the best. Had to get a full set of bearings installed and the whole thing set up properly. Cost me $912 on top of the LSD + I changed the ratio as well. Thats why I had Diff Specs do it for me

Also interested.

They wont be new at that price. These units are pretty bullet proof though and I'm sure they would come with a warranty of some sort... ask Darren

That is a good price - good on ya.

You should have backlash and some other stuff I don't entirely understand checked (at a minimum) when swapping over a diff centre.

Essentially this is correct but the hard part is setting up the pinion depth, backlash ,bearing preload etc, which an experienced diff specialist can do and will save wear on parts.

Sorry these are second hand units but are all in good condition from the states. BMW lsd's are factory 2way lsd's with 45degree ramp angles.Tony has a few tricks that he does and with the standard amount of clutch discs makes them lock up a hell of a lot better.I always recommend the use of red line diff oil.Tony can also machine the housing and fit more clutches to increase lockup.

This addition will dramatically change the handling of your car especially on track days and nobody likes the guy who does one wheel burnouts. If you diff was leaking probably a good time to get side seals.

email me at [email protected] for those people interested.
