Check all the induction & breather hoses. Also make sure the AFM is not sticking

I was told it was a knock sensor on my celica (very similar description). (Can you hear a change in tone when it happens?

Turned out to be spark plug leads.

My guess was something electrical - often causes an issue under load. Had 2 or 3 vehicles with same symptoms over the years. Leads/plugs/coil etc were culprits,

turn out to be a faulty knock sensor according to the local bmw specialist.

The real problem is the engine capacity

The real problem is the engine capacity

Wow your really helpful. NOT.... Please don't comment if you don't have anything productive to say. Thanks. As for lack of capacity its suits my partner just fine, who uses it as a daily driver for efficiency. If i want to go fast I will take my 300kw Rx7 out.

As for you other helpful folks,

Well to update on this Ive got a secondhand knock sensor for it. I haven't put it in yet and it seems to come and go now, seems to have a mind of its own, Ive measured all the leads for continuity, resistance etc, and the plugs seem to be burning correct (Light bronze colour). Ill put the knock sensor in over the weekend and see how it all goes. I will keep you all posted.

Thanks for the help guys

Have you had it scanned Conrad ??

Yea i had it scanned by the local auto electrician and at the local bmw specilist. (jeff grey bmw). auto electrician brang it back with a faulty engine temp sensor(ecu) i replaced this and then it didnt go away. so i bit the bullet and took it to jeff greys and they came back with a faulty knock sensor. quoted me a sh*t load and told me i would have to wait three weeks to get a new one from germany. thankfully i got one through hellBM (thanks alot). so sometime this weekend ill fit it and then well see how it all goes. its running quite alot better at the moment, its very tempremental, so if this dont fix it ill chuck in some new plugs and leads and go from there. ill keep everyone updated.

Seriously what is the point. I came her to get help not her your opinion. I know it is a little engine but that isnt the problem here. If you want to talk about hp and cc go do it on your own time. Silly little comments arent going to help me or any others that have similar symptoms. this is obviously a big issue with cars of this age as they are getting along. I brought this car off an elderly lady who wouldnt know an exhaust from a air filter. So I knew the service history wasnt going to be great. But to save the younger people or people that cant afford to spend a handfull of cash on there cars i started this topic because lets face it these things are over looked. I mean look at my car for instance told it was all these sensors but it probly is just the spark plugs. about 600 bux later. so i hope this topic can help people and i would greatly appreciate it if the silly comments where placed some where else.

Thanks Conrad.

By the way, i havent had time to install my sensor yet just moving house so i will post it when its done thanks

What was the actual fault code ? "actual words" was the fault code present or historical ?

The fault code may have been the "result of " which is quite common...often the fault code you get is the result of something else not working correctly ie: another component that cant be monitored by the DME...its usually a mechanical fault

I'm still going with a AFM on this one...if its sticking, it wont come up with a fault code for the AFM as the AFM is still working & returning a signal to the DME, the engine will run lean and detonate...causing the knock sensor/s to be triggered, which would retard ignition causing the car not to perform as well , however it still should run & accelorate....but not as lively if there was no fault... checking live data while driving should indicate whats going on

Not to argue with Glenn, but if you find after replacing the knock sensor or the AFM it's still there. Just try the new leads. As I said, I had the same problem with my celica. When I got it checked by an auto sparky, they passed a consistency check but was told that for the cost of new leads I may as well give it a go as it was possible that the leads would pass a check but under consistent use would begin to miss. To be honest it sounded like complete bs. Nevetheless, I replaced them myself the following week and the problem went away.

If you could get it to me Conrad and I could sort all your issues out.... I like challenges

We had a similar problem with an E36 316 I a few months ago...the problem is there arent many around at the wreckers to get replacement parts. Took us ages to find an AFM with the right numbers, the dealers wanted $1600 for one...X Germany

Yes I know your out of town, but you could get it transported up here
