E28 engine conversions

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm just curious at this stage about the physical issues regarding putting one of two engines in an E28.

The first is a M50 / M52 / M54, 2.5, 2.8 or 3.0.

The other is the M60 / M62, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.4.

I know there is one E28 on the net using the V8 but I can't find anyone using an M50 or later straight 6.

There would undoubtedly be many other issues, such as electronics, transmissions etc but I'm just curious at this stage about the engines.

Cheers

All pre 1998 engine conversions are easy because of the electronics, after 1998 you would have to use a Link or similar ECU to run the engine with manual only.. the auto wont work. If you decide which engine you want...get the loom and ECU with it and go manual. If the engine was originaly hooked up to auto you can reflash the DME to manual. If going with a 6 cylinder, I would use a M52B28, V8 I'd go M60. May be a E34 M5 3.6 litre ??. Whichever way you go .... GO MANUAL

Apart from that RESEARCH.....SEARCH.... RESEARCH and do the maths.... its not cheap

Hah - I love how everyone who has yet to do a manual conv on their bimmer says - the car has heaps enough power for the auto - a manual would be nice, but the auto performs well and is sooo easy in traffic.

Then they finally get around to going manual and all you hear is MANUALMANUALMANUAL!!!!!

There is something about going from auto to manual which really cements the experience more than just having a manual from the get-go.

I'm with Glenn on engine choices -choose the newest engine which can be easily sourced and fitted, and get the biggest capacity of that model engine.

Do it once, do it right.

There's an E21 in Palmy for $460 at the moment, go real good with the 2.8 in it, very light to start with.

Its just so happens that I know the young fella selling that e21.....he has my 16' Alpinas now :)

Im hoping I have someone seriously interested in the touring at the moment. I was thinking of just buying one of teh many 535is' that are about at the moment, but perhaps its time for a project :)

you will need a e34 525i sump to fit to the m52 engine or maybe my e39 sump from a e39 528i

as the e36 sumps are in the wrong place .

and yes do it with a manual . i have manual pedals etc for e28 also

wiring shouldn't be to much of an issues with abit of research . the later ecu's have to have the EWS (security key code )system conected to them or the engine wont start.

Wayne Frost from EFI Tech in Takapuna can do a non EWS DME for these motors that originally had EWS

I just split the loom and kept DME & EGS seperate to chassis and ABS, was quite simple even with EWS. I also had the donor car so I just swapped the key chips, EWS module & DME with the donor car
