my house got broken into a few months back. the dog was tied up on a "council regulated dog run" which they need to be on when you are not at home.

now we let the dog roam free around the property. no problems since. he is a geman shepard cross with a rotweiler.

if we arnt home and he dosnt know you, he will not let you even try and open the gate. however if he knows you, he thinks mint someone to play with me.lol

dogs are the best home security system ever. and we sometimes offer to loan him out to female mates, if they are going to be home by themselfs for a while. For just peice of mind for their partners and them. As cops take far to long to respond, because people tie them up with trivial cr@p. In married quaters (airforce housing)outside the airforce base(which i currently live in),Airsecurity will be on the scene in 2-5min of something being called in. which also helps .

I don't know why Hamilton is so bad, but it's terrible for thieves. Also talk to your neighbours - see if they noticed anything and also about a neighbourhood watch scheme. It seems a bit ridiculous and is often not very helpful after the fact, but it could help your neighbours and or prevent them thinking it could be worth coming back to see what was replaced under insurance.

Alternatively get 3 big burly dogs

My house has an alarm, it just doesn't work, the landlord won't do anything else for the security of the house, she's a hardout tite-ass.

I wouldn't count on that, burglary is a repeat offense, our house has been hit several times, each time the cops reckon by the same lot. (Yes every time we stepped up security measures to no avail)

Inform your landlord that a you have just recently been broken into and that you would really like the alarm to be working as it would make you feel more secure. Also, if she refuses you may like to point out that if the house is broken into again, judging by the condition of the items in the flat that were damaged, you would be concerned the flat itself may also be damaged.

hamilton is shocking i was in the garage at night working on my car with all the lights on etc and i heard my flatmate come in (he leaves his bike in there ) i asked from under the car if he was going to go to his mates place (i can only see feet at this stage ) i hear a deep voice go "oh f**k" then they gapped it i got out of garage fast but they were long gone luckily i was in there as my hundreds of dallars of tools were all on the bench and they would have been gone.i dont care how bad the justice system would treat me if anyone tries to rob me there getting a powerbar to the knee cap make sure they cant sneak around any more.

needless to say before and after that incident i keep all my tools in my bedroom as the door lock on the garage is f**ked easy as to break in but nothing of value in there just a car a bike and a skateboard

nz needs citizens arrest then you could actually have some control over the situation.

by the looks of this thread there are alot of people having bad things happen to them, maybe if everyone owned a BMW there would be no criminals....

NZ does have a right of citizens arrest.

If you have caught someone breaking the law you are legally allowed to physically restrain them until the police arrive.However you need to be very careful about the "reasonable force" provisos in the law.

Having said that,after a career in pubs,I always found the police pretty reasonable about their intepretation of that as long as you havent beaten the living s**t out of them.

my flatmates car just got broken into last nite, it was left out on the road as the bmw's have priority of the driveway. they smashed the back passengers window, they didnt steal anything tho... he had like 4g of preformance gear, cd's, tools etc etc etc. nothing was taken which was strange, it has an alarm but its silent. so either hey got spooked by the lights on the car flashing or somthing else spooked them, as i dont know why someone would break into a car and not take anything.

i say a good beating will change someones mind about stealing. if someone breaks into my place they better hope the dog gets them before i do, as they will have a better chance of getting out with all motor functions

Good luck with the cops, our neighbour which shares the long drive with us got broken into last Tuesday night and a very large flat screen tv stolen, we heard the car come so got out of bed and then saw it scream back down the drive with its lights off.

Cops were called and a statement was given on the phone, we were told the squad would come the next day to take prints etc. We had one undercover cop turn up ask a few questions and then were told it was not in their interest to follow it up and that these things happen, no finger prints were taken.

Im sure that everyone has a bad experience to share just making the point that its not the easiest job. Just sick of hearing from the same people about their bad experiences.  Maybe it has something to do with the way they deal with the police? or maybe they should sign up and show us how its done.
