Apex 693 Report post Posted June 7, 2009 Now that the Vectra has gone. A Few picks of the missus new Megane. Its a Team F1 edition and one of only a few in NZ. No pictures of the back, I think the photographer wasn’t a big J-Lo fan. What a bloody fantastic car, I though modern Hot hatches had lost all the hotness after driving the Mazda MPS3 and Golf GTI as well as owning an Astra SRI-T. The Megane is one serious piece of kit, it has more grip than any car I have owned and the damper settings whilst hard are quite composed and confidence inspiring. The only thing that bugs me is the ABS calibration, it is way too sensitive for our bumpy back roads. It is absolutely filthy, I spent an hour and a half on the interior yesterday and it is still in need of a rug doctor. The body will be a day job later this week, it will need a serious clean before I even attempt to clay bar and polish it. I went to replace the indicator bulb in the head light and found the problem was a loose connection. Changing the bulb requires removal of the front wheel and inner guards so I pulled the wheels off and started on an under body clean up at the same time, I was impressed with the factory Brembo breaks and braided lines, also noticed a lot of undercar air deflectors, not something I expected on a hatchback. All clean underneath after a blast with a high pressure water blaster and some degreaser, detailed the brakes and wheels with some metal polish. Will take some decnt pictures when she is all cleaned up.

Apex 693 Report post Posted June 8, 2009 Couldn’t afford the R26! Advantage the R26 has over this is the LSD and that’s all, missus said she might retrofit one. Just quietly, this is one of the best cars I have driven. Would decimate a lot of very expensive cars through a back road. I thought you lot would like it. CamB 48 Report post Posted June 8, 2009 (edited) Yeah, I like a lot. I quite want one, but am happy enough in the M3. There's a decent chance the Renault is at least as good a car (ie, could show the M3 a thing or two). Edited June 8, 2009 by CamB
Apex 693 Report post Posted June 8, 2009 Sure would. I wouldn’t recommend one to anyone with a weak bladder or excess fat though, this thing has me jiggling like a fat kid on a BMX, its stiffer than a porn star.

CamB 48 Report post Posted June 8, 2009 (edited) What the wiki page doesn't say is that its French, so it feels good to drive. They set up their hot hatches (all of them) so they turn in well, and you can adjust attitude of the car in the corner using the throttle. Lift off oversteer comes as a free bonus/problem. Yep, the R26 is the car that replaced this 06 R25 for 07,08 and 09 they added an LSD and left everything else virtually untouched, they didn’t change the engine and both are reported to have more like 180kw, one thing they also didn’t mention as these cars have a F1 inspired launch control system. There are only a few in NZ so they are hard to value, they are selling in Australia for au30-35k. Your onto it Cam, I was certainly schooled in French cooking on the weekend, the Renaultsport Cleo is even madder and will annihilate most through anything twisty. briancol 3 Report post Posted June 9, 2009 That was a sort of compliment Graham, however Jeremy Clarkson did say that anything was better than a Vauxhall. At least you have gone European and not Jappa or even worse, Korean.
Honest Paul 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2009 (edited) To cut to the chase, these cars are virtually unbeatable across bumpy NZ blacktop. A combination of great damping, huge grip and an almost surreal ability to change direction quickly make them ballistic. The F1 is mighty, the R26 more so, then there is the plexi windowed, Euro only, Megane R26-R which is without doubt one of the fastest cross country cars in the world. Only the awkward styling and 'bar stool' driving position spoil the show. A friend recently had his immaculate low km '06 F1 for sale for 6 months, no-one seemed interested and he eventually let it go for half what he paid. Bargain of the year.
