E30 '88 318i...Smashed the Sump!

Recommended Posts

OK well. I literally smashed my sump pan in my 318i. Heres some photos. Anybody know if its worth trying to fix or just get a whole new engine or what? Car was only running for 30secs after sump was smashed and still had Oil in it before I completely stopped, but been told I may have f--ked a bearing? Any one know? Not rich, so just want some straight up good advice...

Who would I talk to in Hamilton (prefered) about doing it for me as I am clueless with this type of work, esp in a BMW! Not a mechanic, Im only 22 and slowly learning about cars but this is just too much to take in atm. I am happy to do a cashy job.

The red circle is to show where a bit of the block or some plate has also been ripped off with the sump pan?

That WILL fit mine? have tried so many people on Trademe but NO one has one that will fit. I been told it must be '88 or newer and must be for 1.8 (or 1.6)? Whats yours? How much? I may need the block too, unless someone knows yay or nay?

Howsit dude, Im from hamilton as well. I would recommend carspot or if your a bit tight on the pocket mosen europarts will be able to help you out. Youll only need a new sump, you wont need a new block. Mosens will most likely have a sump

Yep I went and saw Kerry at Moseneuro parts (been to him before for a Gearbox once, good deal). Hes got one on a 1.6 but wants $150+ GST cos the engine is worthless without it, prefer to sell complete engine so wont be cheap for just the Sump pan hence the higher price (i dont wanna go to a 1.6, a 1.8 is slow enough!) So he told me to go have a look around first. And no luck...and if I bought his Sump, I still gotta find someone to put it on cos I do NOT want to lift up the engine & then do all this n that...not keen at all! I was thinking of putting a 2.5L engine in it from same model, but then thats just more $$ I dont have!

But what did I break thats on the 2nd photo? Whats that thing bolted to it? is that the block or just a plate in between the block & sump pan?

And in your Htown? Wonder if your seen my car around? As per my profile & avater photo. Is yours a 2Door or Wagon?

The M40 sump is a 2 piece sump, and the bit that's still attached is part of the upper piece, so you need to find both. Chances are that the motor's ok, but time will tell I guess. You'll need to check that the oil pickup hasn't been damaged as well, it sits down in the front lower sump, the bit you've broken off. I've bought a couple of cars like this which have been lowered too far and smashed the sump, been good buys.

I've got a lot of the bits you need if Mosen's haven't, just pm me if you need them.

If you got BOTH parts that will fit straight onto it, then your the guy Im looking for! I need them urgently. How much you wanting?

And I think the oil; pick up is OK, doesnt seem damaged, will try look tomorrow if the rain clears otherwise just risk it. I dont think Im going to keep this car forever, fix it then sell it. Then maybe look at a nicer one with a bigger engine..this sack costing me too much so far. But yes, how much for both the parts I need?

haha fair enough. Being a 2.5 its bound to have bigger balls than my lil sack 1.8. But in the wet, she likes to step her lil ass out on corners- in the wet only though doesnt even try in the dry - have had a few mates holding on.

So now, does anybody know the easiest way to remove & replace my sump? Any know-hows or step by step etc?

Step 1) GO to supermarket buy beers

Step 2) post on bimmersport - Beers provided for step by step instruction on replacing sump.

Step 3) Knowledgable bimmersport member comes over to drink said beer while telling you how to replace sump

You feel good for fixing car, bimmersport member gets beer, car gets fixed, you make new friend and learn more about fixing cars...

If you provide the parts and hire an engine hoist ( about $50 form hirequip for a weekend ) myself and my mate Troy ( 320guy on here ) could possibly do a cashie job for you. If we did it it would have to be this sunday or next weekend.

PM me or text me on 0272336690.

We could possibly have a look at the car before the weekend, even tonight, and tell you what parts you would need.

If it's anything like a M20 then we may have to lift the engine to get the sump lower enough to slide it out with the oil pump, but the oil pump might come off by taking the bottom half of the sump off so we might not need a hoist.

Subframe gets in the way ya see... might have to drop the subfame as well as lifting the engine to make room too, but I dunno, we would have to have a bit of a look.

Will have a look on realoem.com

Looks like the oil pump is in the timing cover of these. Should be easy as, as long as the sump clears the subframe.

It wont... you need to lift and support the engine and lower the cross member

In my first photo the bar you see is going straight across under the sump. I have arranged with another guy on here who is going to send me the lot (both parts as this is a 2 part sump). I should be able to sus a hoist for Sunday otherwise will just Hire one. Can arrange for you to come look at it tomorrow or Friday - I finish work at 230pm so anytime after 3pm should be fine. Wont be able to do until Sunday anyway as my mate is putting a new engine in his Primera in my garage and we are hoping to start that tomorrow. Will text you.
