zenetti 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Has anyone else here NOT experienced the recession? We are on track for a record month and have almost doubled last years July sales? On top of that we are up about 20% in sales for the calendar year compared to last year. Last year was a pretty good year for us as well, but this year has just taken off........ Boost Junky 1 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) Jonno I work at Partmaster here in New Plymouth. For the last four months we have made bonus and quarterly last month, this is better than our figures for last year .Normally at the end of each month things die off but damn this week has been flatout and sales have been great! I dont think the Naki is feeling things as bad as elsewhere around the country though.. Also being in the automotive trade id say people are scared to spend up on brand new cars on the yards and are fronting up with repairing and maintaining their vehicles.. Random Guy 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Bring in more E30 wheels, you sell out quite quickly. Makes sense to make the most of it. More Alpinas, BBS LM replicas, Weaves. Show us what you can get.

M3 Cab 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Have to say that I havent seen anything of the recession and am in one of the worse area hit, property. Still managed to sell the houses we had built for the market without reducing the prices and now have so much work on the books im having to turn it way. We are booked up past the middle of next year. Personally I think if your business is well funded and your strategy is right, you can ride out most fluctuations. Just pays not to over extend. Also the good news for those with a lot of work on is that prices for most things just keep getting better (dropping) and people are lowering their margins to get work. All in all its not a bad time to expand
M3_Power 636 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 It's only a recession for those who are highly geared or leveraged, for the rest it's just a return to equilibrium before the boom that started 5 years ago.
Jaydubs 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I agreed with the gist of the above, starting the year thinking 'recession, what recession?' as well. Hell I even contributed to Jonno's %20 sales increase - loving the alpina reps BTW... Then I got made redundant and have had a hell of a time finding a job that was comparable to what I had. Self-employed at the moment due to the job market being well stuffed. I was neither "highly geared or leveraged" but i was "f**ked" when I lost my job and had to start living off savings with no income for longer than i would've liked... so I guess for alot of people like me the recession wasn't there until it was.. if you know what i mean.. elmarco 56 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Yes it does seem to be a bit patchy out there. I know some companies that are dead in the water (completely different industries but all market leaders, and large companies), and others that are just flat stick. Really odd times. I do know it is pretty ugly in the job market although well qualified candidates are still finding work.
laadeelaa 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) Hospitality seems to be decreasing in numbers. Simply the lesser well off people don't want to spend their money on dinners out. Edited July 30, 2009 by MS BM
bmpower 3 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I work in New/Used car sales and our business hasn't felt it at all - it is working to our advantage for some reason. At the moment we are struggling to get all our cars PD'd etc and delivered! We are busier than ever and as we keep saying in our meetings 'if this is the recession, how are we going to cope when we are out of it?' To give an indication we have sold well in excess of 100 new cars and not far off that figure in used car sales. That is made up of 4 new car brands and a large range of used. I do know however it is affecting some of our competiters, although having said that there are other reasons other than the recession which could explain their losses. my_e36 43 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I am a 1 hour point-to-point Courier and sales is down 10-15% from last year here. Some other company down over 25% from what I heard.

Guest FrantiC Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Pizza hut here in hastings has lost heaps of sales lately, even with the upped advertizing, coupon drops, new deals like pastas etc it just keeps getting slower and slower and average sales are way down. Fast food in general is a wide hit area, less people blowing their money on fast food and such..

Apex 693 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Yea, I though fast food industries were doing well, at least that’s what my marketing missus told me. Makes sense, it’s so expensive to make a dinner at home for us we are often out for dinner 5 nights of the week. Probably why we are both 20kg’s overweight too
bravo 35 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I'm busy, but the type of work coming in has changed and I'm down to a 2 month backlog from around 6 months. Our competitors (most of whom specialise in one or two fields where as we are much broader) are really feeling it - 4 day weeks, lay offs, etc. The problem is they are now undercutting me. I priced a small job the other day for $800. That was what I thought was a competitive price but with a small margin aswell in case the job turned out more difficult than it appeared (as they always do). Competition quoted $250. I wouldn't even be able to cover wages and vehicle expenses for that. Its shocking when so-called professionals are willing to do work at below cost just so they keep themselves out there and visible. Hopefully it hits them in the pocket enough so they can't keep it up.

Apex 693 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Yep, quoting has become very fierce and I have found customers that traditionally would have just said “do this for me†are now asking “can I have a price on this and we will get back to youâ€. Lucky im cheaper than everyone else!
