Bolts found in bottom of sump

Recommended Posts

To all of you with a e30 or E36 318is M42 or M44 I suggest you check this. I saw a bolt thru the sump plug hole and took the lower sump off This is what I found in the bottom of my sump 3 of the 6 bolts that have fallen out from the upper sump. I also found the other 3 loose.

Common problem, M40 as well, it's worse when it's the bolts holding the oil pickup.

I suggest you take the top sump off as well and change the gasket. The top sump forms the gallery for the oil pick up, and because the bolts have fallen out its likely the gaskets cracked or broken which leads to oil starvation to the head and stuffs the camshaft and hydraulic lifters

Loctite thread lock (blue) should be used on all these nuts and bolts on assembly and the correct torque settings should be used
