NZ318is 4 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 To all of you with a e30 or E36 318is M42 or M44 I suggest you check this. I saw a bolt thru the sump plug hole and took the lower sump off This is what I found in the bottom of my sump 3 of the 6 bolts that have fallen out from the upper sump. I also found the other 3 loose.
Silver Fox 43 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 Common problem, M40 as well, it's worse when it's the bolts holding the oil pickup.
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 I suggest you take the top sump off as well and change the gasket. The top sump forms the gallery for the oil pick up, and because the bolts have fallen out its likely the gaskets cracked or broken which leads to oil starvation to the head and stuffs the camshaft and hydraulic lifters
