mark247 39 Report post Posted June 2, 2010 I'm going to go against the grain here, but doesn't that sound rather tinny?
[email protected] 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2010 I'm going to go against the grain here, but doesn't that sound rather tinny? Very much so, E46 M3s are probably one of most tiny performance cars in the exhaust department, I was in New Market driving along and an M3 opened the taps getting onto the motorway, i was quite surprised how tiny it sounded, far cry from the lazy bassy note of a good V8. Top Secret 2 Report post Posted June 2, 2010 Ahhh, not a fan of the milo tin can with pebbles in it sound. A standard CSL with a carbon airbox (or whatever the BMW nomenclature is) sounds the best to me. Nice car though.
Guest Simon* Report post Posted June 2, 2010 The good ones sound "raspy" and metallic not that high pitched tinny sound
kingkarl 136 Report post Posted June 3, 2010 Nice car. I love the sound. By "our" M3 I assume you mean Dad's M3.

Gotheschu 1 Report post Posted June 5, 2010 (edited) The video was taken with a sh**ty aftermarket iphone app. So the sound is crap but check out this clip of a M3 with the same stuff done to it but with a proper camera. Heres what some guy said to someone who called it tinny on youtube. IsThisAvailable007 1 year ago Yuck! Sounds terrible!! Tinny... enilyksnor 1 year ago Tinny? WTF? you may as well call ferraris sound tinny too! BTW M3 has the best note 6's in the world period. Just my crappy camera. Giving it the bad wrasp. And I paid for the airbox so I like saying i helped contribute to my 1 favourite cars in the world ( but in a hard top not soft top ) I bought 10KW of power haha. And Glenn...... He was hitting round 180.... Edited June 5, 2010 by Gotheschu

hybrid 1044 Report post Posted June 6, 2010 The CSL sound you are refereing to is engine noise and for the most part doesnt originate from the exhaust. It is possible to convert your e46 to a MAP based system and run MAFless carbon airbox. The signature m3 '6' sound is actually from the equal length headers and a 'trait' of the thin wall stainless design. Its is sculped buy runner lenth and placement of the center box muffler if most cases. Also you muffler restriction (or lack of) design. Weather your muffler is a pass through type or stepped inlet/oulet design. A pass through will allow more of the raspy sound threw where as a stepped type will accumulate more rubble or drone (bass). BMW tune this also with equalising tubes or x-pipes. Its a fine balance between performance and sound and both!.
