[email protected] 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2010 In frontal impacts, how well do the E39's fair? Anyone seen a crashed one, been in a crash driving a E39? Any links to information here would be good. From what I have found, they seem to be 4-5 star crash rating cars, then again I suppose it depends which group did the testing. bimmer boy 21 Report post Posted August 23, 2010 All depends on the conditions I guess. Depends also one the E39 and how well optioned it is Extra airbags were optional etc. I think the Standard E39 came out with 4 airbags and well optioned facelift E39's had 10 Airbags as far as I know. I have only read good things about the safety in them. One of the main selling points for them when they came out too. Havent been in a crash in one and I hope to never crash one.. Apex 693 Report post Posted August 23, 2010 Only look at Euro and Australian NCAP. The first E39 was not tested as it is too old but the 98 facelift was with head airbags was and get 4 stars so just consider the first car as safe as long as you avoid accidents that involve rolling over. http://www.euroncap.com/tests/bmw_5_series_1998/49.aspx The E60 was the first to get a 5-star
BM WORLD 1283 Report post Posted August 23, 2010 pretty good i think, most of the ones in our yard have held up pretty good . lots of break off ali bits , also good passive safty in bmw's in general , better brakes than most cars , better handling than most cars , that alone makes them fair better in most crashes . Wom 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2010 yea the brakes on my car have saved me from quite a number of idiots out there "oooh look a car coming down the motorway, lets cut it off and see what happens"
andrewm 236 Report post Posted August 23, 2010 I drove one off the road and down a steep bank, frontal impact on a shelf as i went over the bank around 60+kph (was doing 85 when went off the road- ice- but still my fault) then rolled numerous times and came to a stop upside down, passenger and I crawled out the broken windows, sum total of injuries - minor scratches from crawling on the glass out of the car, THATS IT. So i will definately be buying another one, even with the increased insurance premiums.
