deeveus 81 Report post Posted January 17, 2011 I noticed a while ago it took 5km to start blowing cold air, it wasn't such a problem until now as it was 30 degrees where I was the other day, before this I took it into BMW to have it looked at and they couldn't find the issue, yet still billed me for more than $100 bucks. Today on the way home I put it on as soon as I started the car because it was a good 25 deg outside, it still took a good 3km to get going! Any ideas or hints as to what it could be? Cause I'll have to take it to a third party to get checked out again.
*Glenn* 854 Report post Posted January 17, 2011 No aircon will give you instant cold from start up if the car hasn't been running, especially with the temperatures weve been getting. The evaporator plate has to freeze down to get the cold air. 3km sounds like a little too long though.

From my crib to the end of the road is about 5km and it took that long to start working, it did it a few times up there too and took that long to fire up. Very uncomfortable on a gravel road with windows wound up, and it was 30 degrees up there last weekend! I understand it should take a minute or two to fire up, but jump in my inlaws Prado and it's instant from start pretty much. Any ideas? Apex 693 Report post Posted January 17, 2011 Mine blows cold in well under 30 seconds.
deeveus 81 Report post Posted January 18, 2011 I've taken it into the local specialist, turns out it's where BMW sent it. He said it can take up to 5 mins for it to blow cold, I think this is rubbish. Our Kia Rio Diesel blows cold in about 30 seconds in the same weather up there, so why is mine not? I would have thought the BMW's system would be a bit more comprehensive?

deeveus 81 Report post Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) E53s are old, E70s start blowing cold within seconds I'm not convinced it's an age thing, I'm thinking there's a fault with it, besides, it's under 6 years old I wouldn't call that ancient Edited January 18, 2011 by The Diesel Guy

deeveus 81 Report post Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) Nah, E70 is where it's at, especially the new 3.0d tri turbo. I've driven both diesel variants, it's where it's at alright, but twice the price of my little E53, yet my re-mapped E53 would out handle and outrun them both! Hmmm, the 3x turbo models must go well haha! Edited January 18, 2011 by The Diesel Guy

Not the 40d no, but I'd give the pre facelift E70 sd and 3.0d a very good run for it's money!
Greg111 13 Report post Posted January 19, 2011 Then there's the ultimate X5, eight cylinders and two turbos. But that's petrol, not the devils juice
