nofxdenk 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2011 (edited) Hi guys, Tried searching through the forums but didnt find anything. My E46 '01 330CI has developed a flat spot in the steering rack. Handles horribly. All the other suspension parts seem to be fine. I'm thinking of getting a used one and reconditioning it before replacing it, or reconditioning existing one. *Glenn* 854 Report post Posted May 27, 2011 Are you sure it's the rack ?... who checked it for you ??... some of the aftermarket lower control arms have given problems causing the steering to jam or get very hard to turn
OP6 27 Report post Posted May 27, 2011 How about the swivel/U joint in the steering column? If one of the joins start to seize then that will give a sticky/stiff spot when turning the steering wheel.

Dave@nz 11 Report post Posted June 1, 2011 Hi, Your car seems quit new to have a rack problem and the usual rack problem is a leaking rack not what you are experiencing. The lower control arm bushes are a common problem and the other thing may be a seizing u joint in the steering input shaft at the rack. Cheers Dave
HELLBM 1557 Report post Posted June 30, 2011 Simple solution. Replace a `reconditioned` rack with a road tested rack. Sorted.
