Natalie318i 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2011 (edited) Hi all, My neighbour has this website on his bmw so I thought i would ask here first. Today my bmw 318i 1995 overheated. Needle went into the red I stopped at the next gas station and waited maybe 30min for the car to cool down. When i opened the water it was quite empty, so I filled it up. And drove home, but just when I was in the driveway steam came out of the radiator(?) and i noticed the needle was saying the car was overheated again! I opened the hood and steam/water was coming out somewhere next to the bottle where you put water in! I opened the water and it was drained again? But was not leaking on the ground? I filled it up again but it took a lot of water, maybe 8-10litres!! My dad rang and said it might have a blown head or something? does that sound right? I don't want to drive it anywhere now. but have work tomorrow Thanks, Natalie Edited May 29, 2011 by Natalie318i
huff3r 347 Report post Posted May 29, 2011 Blown headgasket does sound like it, our old E36 316i did the same. The other thing it could be is a cracked radiator/split hose etc Hope its the latter, or be prepared to fork out a lot of money, unfortunately headgaskets are expensive work. Lucan 196 Report post Posted May 29, 2011 Would be water on the ground if it was cracked/split hoses. Sounds like blown HG, I have a similar problem with my E36 too

BM WORLD 1283 Report post Posted May 29, 2011 (edited) dont drive with the needle in the red . its cheaper to get a tow truck than a new engine. could caused by a water leak , split radiator ,failed thermostat , failed water pump , failed bearings/fan belt etc. electric fan not working etc etc . best to get it checked by a professional . if you are lucky the head gasget or head may not have cracked depends how long you drove it with the needle in the red?? what area are you in??
