e46 m3 manual transmission

Hello,

My transmission has a little bit of "play" in it and might be in need of repair sometime soon. I have been told by a BMW repairer that these cannot be repaired and that one must replace the gearbox, at a cost of around 6995.00. However I spoke to a gearbox repair specialist and they told me they'd be able to repair it.

What's the deal here, has anybody else had experience repairing these transmissions?

What sort of play are you talking?

Is it just play in the shifter itself? or crunching gears or noises from the gearbox?

I'd listen to the gearbox specialist. Did the bmw repairer recommend a new gearbox?

Sorry for the delayed response! Thanks for replying though.

I'm not sure how to explain it properly, but if I accelerate quickly and change gear, when engaging the clutch there's a slight noise. It's not really too bad and the gearbox is fine otherwise, but this noise indicates an impending repair on the way.
