Has anyone here imported a car from overseas? Not through a dealer but themselves. I'd be keen to know if anyone has experience with compliance, taxes, duties etc. cheers :)

Yep I have - a few years ago. As have several others on here.

Quite straight forward but Customs etc get their pound of flesh.

Port charges, MAF charges, AG charges, importer charges this end, GST on everything. LTSA fees. In my case - about $700 for the above + the GST

Then a rigorous compliance test this end

Edit - the GST is on the total transaction (inc car)

Importing from the UK seems to be all the range at the moment...

Has anyone done this? Can anyone shed some light on what the VAT qualifying criteria is?

I THINK if your buying a car then VAT isn't included if you plan on exporting the car within a year from date you receive it.

Again, I'm not sure its only what I have heard from a guy that has done it on numerous occasions and brings in Morgans every now and then

Cheers guys, yeah I'm jumping on the Uk band wagon. Thanks for the clarification when it comes to border fees. I'm still unclear as to what the gst is calculated on.

The GST is calculated on the "market value of the car in NZ" according to the customs web-site, but both my imports were calculated on the cost price of the vehicle in the UK.

GST is payable on the whole transaction, so there is also a GST content on the freight (which can be paid to the freight company you are using).

UK is popular at the moment due to the weak pound (latest events will probably take it lower) against the stronger dollar) plus there is a good range of used BMWs available at pretty low prices anyway.

I have brought in two cars, my 'very which I owned and the E46 330d. It is easier for me as I have relatives in the UK that can do some of the work that end for me, like checking out the cars.

If I can do it without any major cock-ups then anyone with half a brain can do it. Just make sure you do your homework first and choose a car that fits the eligibility rules. Go and talk to your local certifier and explain what you are thinking of bringing in, they will give you advice on what can / can't be done and what paperwork is needed, this is the key part - especially on newer vehicles.

A friends RS5 arrived last week from the UK. As a new car, it has the VAT removed and GST added at this end.

GST is calculated on the "CIF", Cost of vehicle, Insurance, Freight".

A VAT qualifying vehicle is (I'm not 100% on this, but fairly sure) a vehicle (second hand) that was first bought as a business vehicle and had VAT paid on it. This is therefore able to be claimed back.

Have to say the whole process was pretty simple.

The only way you can claim the VAT back is if you have a full V.A.T. receipt from a V.A.T. regisitered business. 99.99% of USED car sales would not have VAT included in the price, the only exception would be a commercial vehicle which covers some light trucks and vans.

What process does he go through to get the refund on the VAT?

Yes, from a dealer who was fully up to speed with it, as was the RS5 dealer.

Not sure what the exact process was, I'll ask. The dealer handled it as far as I know. It's only just on the boat in the last week.

We specialise in late model, ex-demo cars which makes it a lot easier. :)

there are definitely some pitfalls when buying privately. Just don't buy from an auction house as they do not have to guarantee clear title. Also look out for any accident damge - the best thing is to have someone on the ground over there to check them out f you are looking at an older car.
